Anyone know of a easy and cost effective way to soft-mod a PS2 in the fashion that the XboX soft-mod works?

If so, please point me in the right direction, and if I can figure it out, I'd gladly post a how-to guide.

no such thing, because there's no software to mod in a PS2. there's firmware, which is stored in a microchip & can't be changed. or if the PS2 firmware can be changed, nobody's figured out a way to change it in any useful manner. but there's definitely no software inside. you can prolly take a guess at why microsoft decided not to include a hard drive (or any software) inside of the x360, and to just rely upon firmware as game-consoles have traditionally done. loading the xbox dashboard from an easily exploitable hard drive was a pretty big mistake, from MS's p.o.v.

the closest thing i can think of is... use a factory-pressed HD Loader or HD Advance disc with the PS2 to format a hard drive, move the hard drive into a PC & copy PS2 games onto it (via a program like HDL Dumb), move the hard drive back into your PS2, then use the HD Loader/Advance disc to start games from the hard drive. that would circumvent the need for a mod-chip or a swap/flip/tool package. i don't think the HD Loader/Advance discs are 100% compatible with all PS2 games though. some games will simply not run.

another easy-ish option is the Swap Magic + flip-lid combo, which lets you change the disc without pressing the PS2's eject button (the eject button alerts the PS2 to the fact that you might be attempting a disc-swap, so that's no good). but i don't think the Swap Magic discs are 100% compatible with all PS2 games either. again, some games will just fail to run at all.

mod-chip is by far the most reliable option, but also the biggest hassle to install (something like 15 to 20 tiny & closely-grouped solder points, or having someone else do the installation).

Any one tried it out and does it affect the laser quality over time?

Actually there is a way to soft mod your ps2, I just did it today as a matter of fact. The best resource I found for doing it is http://www.exploitstation.com
Basically you are using the ps2's emulation of ps1 games to your advantage, and tricking the console into autoloading code on your memory card. This enables you to eventually put a hdd on the ps2 and also has swap-magic like programs as well.
