fully uninstall the drivers, do a driver clearner, reboot, then install fresh drivers

do you really care? i've got a nvidia 4000 series gfx card so i've had to use the dodgy patched executable and shaders and hte game crashes regularly, but i'm still enjoying it.
Its kinda shit that bethesda haven't bothered to try and make it compatible with graphics cards out there and so loads of peeps are having problems, but even if you whack down the resolution (mines at 800x600) and turn off loads of the special shit like pretty trees, grass and water its still a frickin sweet game.
If you're dead set on getting everything as good as it can be, then there might be info on the main oblivion forums...

personally i'd just give up, the game is good enough without the sweetass graphics.

if you have a radion card; there's a hotfix availible on the ATi site, that haxes HDR

runs smooth as.... but crashes

6600gt? You won't see much of an improvement at all...

the 6600gt most like will lag on mod setting with that game. You're much better off getting a nvida 7000 series card or a radeon 1000 series card.

Yeah 6600GT runs medium, 800x600 Res, bloom, Water ON, Dist. ON. I'm happy with it, but get a higher card.

Im grabbing a 7600GT just for this game, it beats my current card by almost 2x which means I should be able to run Obli on pretty high settings, since Im already on like 75% of max settings with Bloom and 4xAA, 16xAF.

And a 6800 runs ALL that?

I can't bring myself to believe that.

A friend has a 6800 GT, a lot better than the 6800 and he can't even run the game on high with any AA without lag.

Your scenario would only make since if you OCed the shit out of your card and play with like 10 fps.

I play the game with A 6600GT on medium graphics. However i have changed to HDR instead of bloom! Turned off Anti-alising and v-syng. EVERYTHING else is on though
! But the resolution is still 800x600.

The game runs well with no problems like lag etc!

I have all fade distances to 75% of max, all the long distance stuff on, Int and Ext shadows at 50%, Self Shadows/Tree Canopy Shadows/Grass Shadows (or whatver) off, and I get no lag in towns, mild lag outside, and the mother of all lags in heavily forested areas.

whats bloom?
it's sort of like, really bright light :ermm:

basically it makes the game prettier :01:

Bloom is a lighter version of HDR.

And bloom isn't that noticable anyways, it's only when you turn on HDR that you will really start get dazzled by all da pretty lights.
