Uh depends what you want?? Though I don't think spam is a problem. viruses and Spyware yes big prob.

if your willing to pay some cash then go for newsgroups. if not Bittorrent.

Learn more about bittorrent:
http://wiki.theppn.org/index.php/BitTorrent_Tutorial
http://btfaq.com/serve/cache/1.html

if you decide to go for Bittorrent should use UTorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/download.php
of coure i'm not biased in any way ;)

you could always try Limewire or Kaza they're good :shifty:

This is so subjective..so here is my choice ... Lopster http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/winlop/winlop-1.2.2-Win32-0.10.zip?download

This is a multi-sourcing client with irc compatibility... and you can log onto my filesharing network with it :)

bittorents run best for me, and I have never had a problem with spam and viruses. other than that, emule is the only other program I really run much. it seems to have a good selection of files and is reasonably easy to use.

Yep,
I think Usenet is well worth the cash though....

Is usenet worth it? And how does it work compared to bittorrents?

Yes it is.
NZB files (this forum host them along with many other sources) work similar to torrents. Load it into your client, and it will download what you want. Just like a torrent.

Best of all, you upload nothing to anyone. So you're not connecting to anyone or thing but a server. It's virtually impossible to get caught using. To the best of my knowledge no one has in it's 25 year history.

You always download at full speed (this is wonderful. I went from downloadind Divx to DVDs)
Your downloads always complete
No bleeping rato to worry about.

It's worth the maybe 15 dollars a month.

I use Bittorrent for large files (movies, software etc.) and Limewire for music. I think they are okay.

Check out DC++ and take a glimpse of other peoples programs that they want to share. Also connecting to hubs also depends on how much you have to offer. Say you have 50 GB to share total then you will be able to connect to that min share hub at start up. This is a great source to Dling your files.

Nothing is 100% safe, but I think you should stick with torrents. And use private trackers if possible. And about programs... You have lots of them, that don't have ads, spam or anything like that...

utorrent by far is the best

Make that 2 votes for utorrent.

Low use on CPU, barly ever see it hitting 1-2% CPU usage.
and on average about 7MB RAM usage.

imo the best p2p network is bittorrent coz it's free unlike usenet coz it's much more complex than dc++ and u can find just about anything u search for...haven't tried usenet though :ermm:

usenet gives you much higher speeds than bittorrent
for example, on usenet i can get around 400-500 KB/s regularly but bittorrent rarely hits above 100.

unfortunately good usenet access usually will cost you some money

bittorrent for larger files ( games, movies etc..) and Soulseek for music..

If you're into music, definitely soulseek. Even though torrent took a lot of people from there, I am still able to find anything. Movies can be found, also, but usually art stuff like Kurosawa, Hitchcock,...

I use Ares for popular songs, and music videos. No spam. Very much like the old Kazaalite, but NO fake files. Very elegant programming. Youll see what I mean.

Slyck has several useful guides at http://slyck.com/guides.php . Personally, I recommend bittorrent with utorrent as your client.

My advice stay away from kazaa. I used bearshare once (for music now and then) but now im with newsgroups...thats the fastest thing your going to get....but torrents havent let me down either. I havent had any viruses with them.

ohh and...shit i didn't find the edit post button :\

anyways, if you don't use\don't have an invite for a Torrent site, you can always use DC! i recommend SababaDC which is an israeli DC++ Mod, very easy to use!

you can download almost anything,instantly...its much faster then any other P2P\file sharing soft i've every used.

search it in the net...

I pay for Newzbin and Giganews. Maxes out my 10mb Broadband and I can get pretty much anything I want. It's perfect.

Costs me £13 per month.

I have to say that I second the DC++ recomendation, but its a little harder to get used to and the forums aren't very receptive to helping new people.
As for music in a pinch I use Ares but its not something I trust 100%, since I can get music off of DC++ but it takes much longer.
Topping the list is torrents in general, I don't really care what interface you use (as long as its legitimate - meaning shares appropriatly) since its all up to you on what is comfortable. I've been a fan of Azureus for as far back as I can remember (since I stopped using the official BT client), but my best friend is a huge fan of uTorrent; so choose what you like (or at least what you can get help with) and go from there.

Meh, usenet (up to 100mbit speeds, huge amount of scene releases) and bittorrent are both very good.
