Playing CD-R in DVD players

i have downloaded some movies in the .avi format and they won't play in my dvd player, one did but the other 15 didn't. What file format will play in every DVD that says it plays CD-R. if there is, is there a program out there that will change any format to that format.....does anyone know what to do here......

you need to buy a divx dvd player, phillips is a chep one ~60 bucks US

oterwise you will have to convert them to vcd/svcd for cdr's or dvd for dvdr's
