what rpg got u started in the role playing genre? list that game and then list ur favorite rpg per system.

got me started: Dragon Warrior I (lol, i've probably beaten this game around 10 times)

atari: Adventure
nes: Dragon Warrior I
gba-ds: don't have one
sms: Phantasy Star I
snes: Chrono Trigger
genesis: Phantasy Star II
saturn: Panzer Dragon Saga
dreamcast: Evolution (i'm sure skies of arcadia & grandia 2 were better, but i never played them)
n64: none (played quest64, but that game was dog shit)
ps1: Final Fantasy Tactics
ps2: Final Fantasy X-2
gamecube: Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2
xbox: Panzer Dragoon Orta
pc: Diablo 2

close runner up to favorite ps1 rpg is castlevania sotn. really good game, but if i had to pick between the two, well fft ftw!

Id say Link (which most people know as Zelda) for the NES. This was the first console I was exposed to and I was instantly hooked onto this game. Even though each boss looked the exact same there was a slight difference in their movement and the color of the bricks in the background  Still a great game though.

Spectrum actually, I always wanted to play the C64 version because it had colour graphics and cooler features. I downloaded it a few years back for PC (I think...) just to complete it for old times sake.

The tape version I had back then was bugged so you couldn't do any of the latter dungeons. :(

LoL aye MERP - complicated for a pen and paper kinda role playing experience (at least for a thicko like me) But the background story and extra stuff you could get was really amazing. Not to mention the great art work. Basically we used MERP as the structure but quickly ditched the rules or slightly simplified them to our needs.

maybe i'm wrong? games like diablo & dungeon siege are real time rpg's. final fantasy tactics & front mission are stradegy rpg's. i guess u could call the elder scroll games first person rpg's, but zelda is an adventure game and not a rpg.

I think you're wrong (no offence), the Zelda games have enough RPG elements to qualify them as action-RPG's. Though with Zelda you could probably argue that it is a puzzle-game, adventure game or even a platformer (I doubt you could make up a convincing argument that they are a flight-sim though...).

People tend to make any game that has dungeons in it and/or set in a "fantasy time" an RPG.

Zelda is not an RPG.

We know, it's an action-rpg incorporating elements of puzzle/platform/adventure games. I'd be very surprised if there is not a large number of people out there who first played this game and then got into RPG games.

Ok since the definition has been flexerized then let's add GTA, Metal Gear, Metroid, and Castlevania to the list of RPGs.

"Flexerized" isn't a word so I'm not sure what you mean, but you'd have to make a convincing argument for a game to be added as a subset of the RPG genus. I think you'd struggle to come up with half of a decent argument as you can for defending Zelda's action-RPG status.

Even if you can't bear to admit that Zelda is an action-RPG you'd have to admit it's a damn sight nearer the RPG line then any of the titles you've mentioned (if we ignore the fact that a couple of the Castlevania games have been RPGs).

Though the latest GTA game certainly borrows from RPG games in that your character has stats that can be improved as you practice that stat (Oblivion has pretty much the same system just more complicated).

Because I thought the characterisation was shit.

If the GTA franchise keeps on stealing ideas from RPGs then expect GTA 4 to be set in medieval Europe, the main character to be a spikey haired teenager with just one parent who saves the world and falls in love with a princess, the game to be turn-based with action mini-games that require the pressing of one button and the final boss will morph into at least 3 different guises before being killed.

DorisInsinuate

Doubt that would happen. It would require the game to be a bit progressive.

THE BEST ARE:

1. Baldur's Gate
2. Fallout 2
3. Baldur's Gate 2
4. Fallout
5. KotOR 2

all for PC, the games like Diablo are not pure RPG they have more action than adventure and mysteries.

Next disadvantage of games like Diablo is that the objects like weapons or armor are randomly generated and always is something better than you actually have.

In Baldur's Gate all things are unique and when you find one of the very powerfull you are someone.

i never played diablo 1 or 2 back when they came out. i think the first game of that genre i played was microsofts dungeon siege. i loved it! just enjoyed the game for what it was. very easy and pretty to look at. liked always customizing my character with better and better equipment. looking back at it the game really wasn't that emmersive, but i really liked it for some reason. then i played diablo 1. lol, took it off. grafx just turned me off from the start. i mite go back to it just so i can say i beat it... then i installed diablo 2. game was really good. liked it enough. i'm currently on act 3 or something. dont' remember, but (i know this is wrong) the grafx from m$ ds just made diablo 2 very uneasy on the eyes and never really thought much on diablo 2. i recently formated and diablo 2 is gone. i saved the game saves so i'll get back to it sometime. meh, diablo 2 is ok i guess. hail titan quest?!
