View Full Version : Just An Idea

What do you guys think about members swapping books? I've over 120 books (thats after I sold some on amazon market place) and I know I won't be reading most of them again.

Members could list the books they would like to swap and if any other members would like that book, they could offer one of theirs in return. This way, your getting rid of a book you know you'll never read again & gaining another.

All you'll have to pay is the postage and packaging but that comes to about £1.50 at the most for a softback book, not sure about hardback. I'm sure it'll still be cheaper than buying a book if your posting a book abroad too.

Let me know if you think this is a good idea or not.

It's a good idea, but somewhat unfeasible, for me at least.

Not only would it likely kill me on the customs, I have a rural route address, which means no packages. :/

I'm with ya there :)

Although I don't mind losing the paperbacks that I don't find particularly interesting, I tend to keep most until I can find a suitable hardback replacement.

The idea has some merit for ppl in same countries
postage is usually paid by weight.
I give my 2nd hand books to a psychiatric hospital ,salvation army may also be
an idea?

I do give the books that I can't sell on amazon to charity. I was actually trying to create a comminity between us book lovers by making it easy to get rid of books we don't want, while knowing that other members will have benefited.

Anyway, it was only an idea & I didn't expect anything to come of it, I just wanted peoples views.

Curley, here via your link in signature.

The book swapping is a alluring idea but I can't see it taking off. Just because of the cost balance between value and postage. In this community, even if a fair % participated say 3-5, the participants would be too far flung to make it a deal.

But for novelty value not to mention freindship building... well then the postage doesn't seem a high price. So maybe someone will offer to trade. Besides FC's *cough*generous *cough* one.

I'd be interested in trading some stuff - but most of my good books I reread at least once every one or two years. It has occurred to me, however, that I have a number of books that I would be happy to get rid of in exchange for another good read. I have a pretty large collection spanning pretty much every genre. What kind of stuff are you interested in?

It would take me at least a whole day, probably two to go through all my books, let alone scan and link them. If anyone is really interested, then tell me what you're after, I'll tell you what I'm after and we'll go from there.

That all depends on what kind of books you read. I've got over 120 (and a few more ordered from Amazon). Books i'm into:

Horror: I've a vast collection of Stephen King, James Herbert, Dean Kootz & Richard Layman.

Thriller/Crime: Martina Cole (my new favourite author - i'd recommend her to anyone), Faye Kellerman - i've only got two of her books so i've still got to make my mind up on her. Jeffrey Deaver, again a great author.

A lot of other books that I can't really remember at the mo, mainly modern day/general fiction/romance but i'm planning on sorting my books out this w/e so i'll let you know by then.

I'm into anything apart from sci-fi, although since everyone keeps raving about it i' probably give that a try.

Cool.

Most of the Horror I have I'd like to keep (btw - I consider horror a sub-category of sci-fi), but I've a number of King, Koontz, Barker and other misc. titles I'd be willing to trade.

I've also got quite a bit of thriller/crime stuff that I'll probably not read again (for obvious reasons).

I've also got a ton of other stuff - mainly historical fiction, classic lit., general fiction, philosophy, poetry, texts on astrology, vampires, mythology, holistic medicine, etc.

About a third of my collection (at least) is music. Books containing music of every type and genre, books on music, books on musicians, the history of different types of music, books on audio engineering and psycho acoustics etc.

I'm really into getting some Lumley stuff, which I heard about here. I love Neil Gaiman, Iain Banks, Anne Rice (though she's getting boring and predictable), and anything twisted and strange but well written. Actually, I'm probably into just about anything good. :P

Yay!!! Glad to know theres another horror fan out there (even if he does classify it as sub sci-fi ).

:P

Y'know...the more I think about it, I guess you're right. Horror should be it's own category. It's just that some of my stuff could be considered both, so I guess the sub-category is less complicated for my brain. I think there's a sub-category there somewhere though, cause vampire and werewolf and monster books are easy to categorize as horror, but what about stuff like Neverwhere or Servant of the Bones?

MagicNakor
05-14-2003, 02:11 AM
Horror is actually classified as a sub-category of Fantasy... ;)

:ninja:

tianup
05-14-2003, 02:23 AM
Then shouldn't sci-fi be a sub-category of fantasy as well?
