so i have been downloading some music torrents for the first time and im mostly looking for complete discographys. im curious, do any of you migrate these files to your iTunes / iPod? i definitely want to as i use my iPod everywhere.

where i can see it getting tricky is i am anal about organization in iTunes. if the files downloaded dont have the artists name, track name, album name they wont sort correctly in iTunes and subsequently on the iPod. do any of you process the files you download for organized import into iTunes?

Don't you just download the mp3 files and put them on and the artist name etc should come up? I personally do not possess an ipod but i know people that do and the artists name seems to come up anyway?

yes the artists name, album, and track number does display on the iPod but those are columns in the iTunes database. when importing tracks from a CD that iTunes can locate on the CDDB the songs are imported in an organized fashion and the necessary columns are populated with the data from CDDB. it gets tricky when you are importing mp3's that you've downloaded. alot of the time the information (artist name, album, and track name) are not filled in, the tracks are just identified in the decription. this is where the problem arises.

in the past ive spent time filling in the data in the mp3's before importing into iTunes, like i said, im anal about organization.

maybe someone will make themselves rich and develop an app that converts mp3's data so that its ready for appropriate import into iTunes.

Or maybe people can just edit the details of the files themselves to match their desires accordingly.
You can just edit it by renaming the actual file.
or
in some cases right clicking the file and going to the properties of the particular files.

exactly. right click, go to properties, click advanced and input the data there. but if you download an artists complete discography, well, youve got alot of editing to do to make it iTunes ready.

Not everything is auto filled ;)
Sometimes requires a little editing.

http://musicbrainz.org/doc/PicardTagger <-- that retags tags files based on their acoustic fingerprint, might be what your looking for?

also, the vast majority of music on OiNK's is correctly tagged, might consider trying to get an invite?

Yeah, I definitely do process them beforehand. I'm pretty strict with the tags as well, if not completely anal about it. I make sure that cover art and lyrics are attached, no comments, soundtracks defined by "(OST)", track numbers have padding when one-digit (01, 02, ...), etc.

I use Tag&Rename for all of that.

Torrents usually already have the artist and album name with them. But i agree if your downloading every song individually... this can get messy.

i haven't tried that program but http://www.id3-tagit.de/english/index.htm can read the all the file names you select and put everything into the id3 tag in a couple clicks. its so easy to use.

I'd buy it in a second. I still find it hard to believe that someone hasn't come up with a program that's smart enough to do that.

Yeah right. I just bought an 80gb iPod about 2 months ago so I can ditch my Nano. This way I can put all of my music on it, (68GB's worth) but so many of the tags are different. Any change in the names, even capitalization, spacing, etc will list the song/artist/genre differently.

When I want to listen to an artist I just want to find the name and see all of the songs for that person/group, but instead I see:

linkin park
Linkin Park
linkinpark
LinkinPark
Linkinpark
linkin_park
Linkin_Park
Linkin_park
etc.

We want a program that will scan our music folder(s), then find those similarities and list them all and then give us the option of telling the program to name them all with the same artist's tag. The same can be true for the album title or genre. This way, I'll see all the songs by said artist at one time.

Screw trying to rename 68GB (16,000 songs) worth of music individually. :frusty:

TagScanner 4.9 is very close to being able to do this, but not quite yet.

Thanks! you need to Be A Member 1 Month AND Have 5 Posts To Use The BT Invites Section, then you can request an invite of trade for one.

umm i think "vast majority" is a bit of an over statement, everytime i download from oink seems im always pulling my hair out because retards cant bother to name/tag things properly...i would say a decent percentage is tagged proper.

I agree. The interface is a lil cluttered but after you've used it for a while, tagging's a breeze. Earlier i was using the supertag feature in Musicmatch which is quite good too. The key is to tag your mp3's as soon as you've downloaded them coz once they accumulate, it becomes virtually impossible.

that is why you should not use itunes

it is pesky with its naming system
