I was just wondering how many people on filsharingtalk read comic books. I know there is a fairly large file sharing community out there and, as a result, its difficult to really narrow down anything new to read as almost everything is available.

Most of the stuff I read is stuff I already buy and collect anyway. I figure the responses I get here will give me a good indication of whether or not I should ever mention comics in the forum again :whistling

Anyway. My alltime favorite comic is The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.

My current favorite is Fables by Bill Willingham and Co. I also greatly enjoy X-Factor. The X-Men are my guilty pleasure, and X-Factor is the best written book amongst the family of books, imo.

Does anyone else have anything they'd like to recommend? I tend to like Vertigo comics and I lean towards planned stories rather than serials. So um.. Savage Dragon is not my cup of tea. I also happen to believe we are in a golden age of comics (or maybe slowly exiting one... after all the comic book movies fade out). And that the early to mid-90s were a dark dark time for fans of good stories.

I tend to buy the trade paperback version. My favourite is probably the Preacher series but I really enjoyed Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell. I have most of the trade paperbacks of The Sandman but I haven't really got round to reading them yet. I should really try and read The Dark Knight Returns as well. I have a load of different ones on my book shelf waiting to be read like Promethea and Tom Strong. I find it difficult to read them on my computer or laptop so I have to buy them if I really want to read them.

Here's my recommendations :-

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Alan Moore ..... humerous alternate-history victorian madness , really quite glorious .

Transmetroplitan - Warren Ellis ..... cynical cyberpunk futurism, jam packed with invention .

Y - The Last Man - Brian K Vaughn ..... a biological disaster has un-manned the world, with the exception of Yorick, the last man . Brilliant .

War Of The Worlds / Scarlet Traces - Ian Edgington ...... post alien invasion, alternate history trilogy, inventive & stylish .

Boneyard - Richard Moore ...... sexy supernatural comedy .

Chicanos - Carlos Trillo ...... brilliantly observed stories of a less than perfect, female Latino private detective, strangely uplifting.

Courtney Crumrin - Ted Naifeh ...... a young girls delightfully dark dabblings in the supernatural .

Lenore - Roman Dirge ...... the twisted adventures of a cute little dead girl .

The Complete Concrete - Paul Chadwick ...... how a man, who's transformed into a near indestructable, super strong being, adapts to his new abilities . Not your normal super-hero fluff .

IF you mean comic strips then it has go to be Calvin & Hobbes - (own the omnibus too it's gold), followed closely by Oveerboard and The Far Side :)

Wrt comic books I haven't read any in recent years as they aren't worth the price but during my heyday in the lat 80s -late 90s my favorites included Spiderman (all titles, but Venom saga was one of the best esp wrt art), the main X-Men titles (X-ecutioner's Song and AoA were the best sagas there), Hulk (Mr. Fixit saga was the bomb!), Batman (DK & Detective Comics - loved Knightfall), & Daredevil (in that order).

I was reading Asterix. I really like it so much. The books are depiction of the adventures of a Gaulish village and how they band together to defeat the Roman Army of Julius Caesar. The main character of Asterix has a friend Obelix. Obelix has a dog called Dogmatix. The chief of their tribe is called Vitalstatistix and the tribe has a druid called Getafix who brews magic potion which gives them all super powers. There is also a bard called Cacofonix who is prevented from singing at any point of time in the story. The particularly funny names of the characters along with tongue-in-cheek puns and play of words are the key features of the series.

the green lantern character had its ups & downs over the years, but the green lantern corps was always a great concept with a lot of potential. it's nice to hear that a new writer is giving it a good treatment.

can't see myself ever getting into crossover event driven superhero thing again, though. i used to like it when i was a kid, but just don't have the patience or the appetite for it anymore. especially have no interest in getting sucked into anything like the old chris claremont version of x-men, where you had to buy 5 or 10 different series every month just to understand what was happening in his superhero soap opera. if i read a comic book nowadays, i basically need it to be a few hundred pages at most with a definite beginning, middle and ending. "graphic novel" with emphasis on novel.

regarding the original topic of the thread, it's difficult for me to choose any specific titles as my most favorite, since there are so many that i've read and so many that i haven't... but...

watchmen and dark knight returns, kinda obvious and nearly everyone prolly has those. miracleman, brat pack, marshal law (by judge dredd writer pat mills), love & rockets, madman, daredevil (frank miller years), elektra assassin, grendel, sandman mystery theatre, bacchus, swamp thing (alan moore & rick veitch years), eightball, anything by jim woodring or charles burns, etc.

recently been visiting the local shop and looking for newer things to read. been reading a bit of garth ennis' the boys, and some things by mark millar (marvel 1985, chosen: american jesus... and waiting for tpb of kick-ass before attempting to read it). i didn't think those were completely terrible or anything, but i'm still sorta on the search for something new that'll completely floor me like the older stuff i listed used to do.

I actually just got into comics earlier this year. A friend of mine brought me into the comic book scene, as he is a HUGE collector of comics.

I started reading Conan The Cimmerian, and then moved onto the different spin-offs of the series. Now im reading Conan the Cimmerian, Kull, and Solomon Kane. Basically all of the Robert E. Howard stuff.

Its all so gory, awesome, dark, and just plain addicting!

But nowadays, with college and all, I don't have time to follow 10-15 comics monthly, so I read Walking Dead, The Boys and every once in a while a Marvel comic I find interesting.
