or insted of messing with thr regestry u can just turn them off :D

1) open run and put in services.msc

2) select messenger

3) go to stop messenger or disable

this will deactive the messages and not mess with msn!

Go to Administrative Tools (in Control Panel), select Services, then Messenger and click Disable and Stop. I'm assuming you're running either XP Pro or Win2k...

Exactly what this guy said is what you should do, and make sure you dont just stop it, make sure you go to the properties and disable it so it wont start at boot time.

For all you idiots that went screwing around in your registry to fix this messenger crap, next time use your common sense.............get it? "messenger service " get it?

Anyway I have a hardware based firewall built into my cisco router I dont have to deal with it anymore but man was it annoying.

It has been possible for many years to spam users using the Messenger Service. This type of spam is also called WEBPOPUP and it can hit you even when your web browser is closed. Why people waited until now to start using this type of pop up spam is not known. In fact, there is legitimate use of Messenger Service pop ups. System administrators may send a Messenger Service pop up window to users to display important information. The problem is that anyone, not just the system administrator, can send these messages. Spammers have taken advantage of this sad fact.

How to disable the Messenger Service

Windows XP (Home and Professional editions):
1. Click Start -> Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance.
3. Click Administrative Tools.
4. Double click Services.
5. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" (a single click).
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
7. Click the STOP button.
8. Select Disable or Manual under the "Startup Type" menu selection.
9. Click OK.
10. No need to reboot - You are now blocking webpopups advertisements!

Windows NT/2000 (Server and Professional editions):
1. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Admin. Tools -> Services.
2. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" (a single click).
3. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
4. Click the STOP button.
5. Select Disable or Manual under the "Startup Type" menu selection.
6. Click OK.
7. No need to reboot - You are now blocking webpopup advertisements
