videotape has been available since the late 60s/early 70s. it was just too expensive in the very beginning for average people to own it. in the late 70s, it was expensive, but a lot of people did own video recorders by then.

it's samara's voice on the phone.

they lift the curse from themselves by showing the tape to someone else. not sure exactly why that works, since the "curse" is supposedly actually a virus. i guess it's just a supernatural thing that defies logic. but that is how it works.

actually, they lift the curse by making a copy of the tape, not just by showing someone else. that is why her husband dies but her son does not, b/c she made the son make a copy.

Also the Ring is remake of the Jap movie Ringu (they are almost exactly alike shot for shot).
Feardot.com is a rip-off of the Ring

I'm with adthomp on this one. It was scary as hell but I spent the whole friggin' time trying to understand HOW the tape got made in the first place. I know vhs tapes were around back then, but someone tell me how the images were RECORDED and by whom.

Samara's Voice.

She burns the tape cus she gets very angry. But to lift the curse and live, you have to make a copy of the tape (cus it was said that all Samara wanted was to be heard). The mom made a copy (the one under the couch) and she made the boy make a copy, so they lived. But the other guy doesn't make a copy, and he dies.

Does this make things clearer?

Ring aka Ringu, the japanese original, is a classic and very scary too.

there was sequels out, the Ring 2 and the ring virus and shit, but they were crap.

anyone know if there is a 700mg divx of the american ring?

i thought the Ringu sequels were alright-- but the thing is, they're more like detective dramas than straight horror films. they're more about exploring the Ringu legend, than scaring you.

i kinda agree, the Ringu sequels could've used more scary bits... but it seems to be more of an american tradition to use the sequels to repeat the formula (i.e. the baddie kills more teenagers, it's basically the same movie again but with a different setting). and with Ringu, they decided to aim the sequels toward hardcore Ringu fans who want to know more about the whys and wherefores.

so if you really are dying to know why this or that happened in Ringu, the sequels explain a lot of that. but if you don't need to know, then you can pass on them.
