What's the OS? Don't the early one have a ceiling? Are there IRQ jumpers or register dips to set?

It's a Penitum1 166MHz running 98SE.
Is there anything in the BIOS I can change

probably if you can get into it and understand it all. They didn't make things real clear back then. If the board has the SDRAM slot then you should be able to select to use it only in BIOS. I have had a few that required setting the ram manually and assigning it to an irq and the even older ones had a set of dip switches on the board that had to be in the right sequence to register each ram module.

What's the brand? you might be able to find a website with support on old versions of pcs for that brand. The ram could be dusty.. scratched.. etc.. Those will cause it to fail.
