View Full Version : View/delete Kazaa's Preview Files

In case you didn't know, Kazaa will make copies of the files you preview with theater in your temporary internet files folder. Normally, they don't show up and aren't accessable with explorer, and clearing your temporary internet files folder won't delete them. And with XP, even a search won't show them (unlike other Windows versions). However, there are two ways I've found to view and delete them in Win XP.

1. Login as a different user and go to Documents & Settings\(your username)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ and look through all the folders.

Or a quicker way:
2. When in your temporary internet files folder in explorer and logged in as you, just add '\Content.IE5' to what's in the address bar.

You can now see everything in the folder as it actually is. Doing a search from there will now show all the files. You can delete any other files that have been left behind as well as the files that Kazaa left from previewing with theater.

I cleaned out several hundred MB when I first realized this. Also keeps people from finding remains of all those bad movies you thought weren't porn, but were mislabled ;) .

so, they will never get deleted unless you do this?

Yep. Part of the joyous KMD experience. Really no way to modify that unless shouting at Sharman counts.
Hell it got us a tabbed interface...
Oh well, if your dumb enough to use theater instead of a real media program like bsplayer, you deserve this fate.

Well, most people don't have the slightest clue how Kazaa stupidly previews files, so they naturally use theater since it's convenient, not knowing that they're wasting tons of HD space. So I guess 'ignorant' is the term you want. :P

what if you put the amount of disk space u use in the temperary internet folder to 1 MB, do u still have to worry about the files taking tons of HD space.

I actually found my way there using a tip I found on some website utilizing internet explorer to view the stuff on my harddisk.... it's a different way that comes down to the same thing, only I use IE instead of the normal explorer, and guess what... my brother has been visiting a crap load of porn-sites lol.....
Good tip tho, and it doesn't work for just the kazaa preview files in case someone hadn't already realized.
Like said, being the administrator on this machine, I could see my brother's temorary files too.... I didn't set a disk space limit because I don't mind a little elbow grease to clean out the stuff on my computer every now and then.
And that's what I'm going to do right now.... got 2.4 gigs of useless stuff begging to be removed.

IDK if this will work, but, can't you go into:

Internet Explorer:
Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files, coz that deletes all your Temporary Internet Files too, I think it's easier, but, that may not delete your KLite Temp files... IDK

Windows washer will delete it for you[/quote]I'm sure it and other tools will clean them just fine, but it never hurts to know how to clean it manually. :)

me=D: If the file you're trying to delete is still open in Kazaa's theater, it won't delete. Either close Kazaa or play another file in theater. If the files are avi's, however, then the reason they won't delete is because of a bug in WinXP. There's something you can do to fix it; I remember seeing it somewhere in this forum. If you don't fix it, you still may be able to delete them from programs that have their own file explorer (like Nero), or from a number of different filesharing programs.

Edit:
To fix XP's avi handler bug, in Regedit browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\System FileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler and delete the Default key contained in this folder.

Well, I used Windows Washer trial version and I recovered 79.7 MBs of space, but I was not sure where in that program it deleted the kazaa theater cache.

Also WW did not detect Opera, Firebird or my older Netscape browsers. It detected IE 6 and Netscape 7.1 ok for some reason. *shrug...

Is there a way to uninstall or disable the theater in CleanKMD ?

If the instructions in the first post are too much for you, then you'd probably be better off with a program that'll do it for you, like windows washer. BTW, I've tried it myself and it does in fact clean everything in the temporary internet files folder, and it's pretty simple to use.

Not to my knowledge.

if i may:

your ie5 content folder path is:

my compputer>c:drive> Documents & Settings>(your username)>Local Settings>Temp folder>temporary internet files>content ie5

the above path is for xp

clean kmd which version?? if you are refering to 2.6 no its not even complete, no extensions.

to be able to get to the content ie5 folder and see your files, you need to enable show of hidden files and and disable hide protected operating system files

tools>folder options>view> here check the box for ?show hidden files?then uncheck the box that
says ?hide protected operating system files (recommended)

Is there a way to disable or remove the theater in any k++ version ?

Oh, I never realized that I forgot to mention that :">. I've always had those settings that way and guess I often forget the default settings that most people have...
Thanks Muscleman.

Also, you can get to your temp internet files from IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings -> View Files. This might be simpler

And yeah, K-Lite 2.4x is close as you'll get to removing the theater. I doubt it will happen in 2.6 anytime soon.
