I know that one can prove that something does exist, at least to a reasonable standard.

How do you go about being so sure that it doesn't. I would genuinely be interested in your thought processes.

I am not disagreeing, or agreeing with you. I just want to know how you can be so adamant (not the ex pop star).

IMO trying to debate whether aliens exist or not is like trying to answer the ancient question "If a tree falls and no-one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

It's unanswerable. And until either side give inquestionable evidence of their beliefs, then it's gonna be like that for a while.

@ JP - Sorry that I don't have a huge sheet of facts, and calculations to show you. But I haven't gone so far as to try and prove my hypothesis.

It just seems so highly improbable to me that if in fact it were even possible for beings from another world to visit ours... then it would still be highly unlikely that they would choose our little marble to spend their vacations on.

IMO the possibility is so minute as to be insignificant - therefore I regard it as being zero.

I wasn't asking for a huge sheet of facts, just an idea of how you reached your conclusion.

I seem to upset you every time I ask you a question. At least it appears that way to me, by your responses. I must attempt not to do that in future.

So your "hypothesis" is purely intuitive. Fair enough, I was only wondering.

You can video it and watch / listen later. That way no one was around when the tree fell.

However when the tape was listened to the sound could be heard.

My use of the words curt and harsh were merely a little joke since I have seen you use them before.

Your vocabulary is obviously superior to mine.

I thought as much, tho I wasn't sure. I often find your sense of humour / hidden messages somewhat singular.

When I read the riddle pages I have to go back to check what you said, when you have made a hidden guess. I normally don't catch them the first time round.

I have also seen you use barsteward recently, a particular favourite of mine.

Re the vocabulary thing, now I know you are being sarcastic, which really is a bit h4r5h.

It's probably what "they" call a coan (or koan).

I watch a teacher lecture on the sutras
His eloquence flows like running water.
Expounding on the five stages
And the eight categories,
He explains them with unequaled cleverness.
They proclaim themselves masters
And others believe it.
However, question them about the essence of Zen
And they have no useful answer.

Although I recognize and understand the words you use (well 99% of the time anyway), you seem to have the ability to pull the more eloquent words quickly from within your brain.

I on the other hand, often have to ponder for a while to be able to express myself in a similar fashion.

That is why I feel that your vocab is better than mine - perhaps it is rather more your "command of the language" of which I refer.

(Have I just proven my own point?) :P

Koans are the folk stories of Zen Buddhism, metaphorical narratives that particularize essential nature. Each koan is a window that show the whole truth but just from a single vantage. It is limited in perspective. One hundred koans give one hundred vantages. When they are enriched with insightful comments and poems, then you have ten thousand vantages. There is no end to this process of enrichment." (Aitken 1990b:ix)

I think the very nature of a koan makes every spelling form correct!!

Trees would know you planted that cam/microphone.
They would still refuse to make a sound while falling down, just to confuse you.
Besides, what if your mike was broken?
And oh yes, the falling is relatively silent, is the landing that causes all that racket. :P

Will we find aliens (or aliens us)?

Planetary systems like our own require an iron core.
Iron, and other heavy elements was produced from third generation (or maybe fourth, I can't remember) supernovae. Ie the first generation produces carbon, the collapse of (second generation) carbon stars produces heavier elements and so on until the iron phase occurs.

But the universe (at least according to the big bang theory) is only just old enough to have had that many supernovae generations, so although there are almost countless stars out there, comparatively few can have iron cores.

Then consider how many of those would have a planet with the right planetary conditions (orbitally), and in turn how many of those have the right mix of chemicals. If you then consider the chances of life actually developing (and bear in mind that we are talking about recognisable life), it is possible that only a small number of planets in the universe will have created life.

And of those few, how many of those will have created sentient life?

We may indeed be alone.
