SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- "Anna Patterson's last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system. She believes her latest invention is even more valuable - only this time it's not for sale.

Patterson instead intends to upstage Google, which she quit in 2006 to develop a more comprehensive and efficient way to scour the Internet. The end result is Cuil, pronounced "cool." Backed by $33 million in venture capital, the search engine plans to begin processing requests for the first time Monday.

Cuil had kept a low profile while Patterson, her husband, Tom Costello, and two other former Google engineers - Russell Power and Louis Monier - searched for better ways to search.

Now, it's boasting time.

Web index: For starters, Cuil's search index spans 120 billion Web pages."

:view: View: http://www.cuil.com/ - Apparently it's still in testing because I keep getting "Oops! We couldn’t find that page." messages. Works sometimes tho'.

I tried Rammstein and got some good results, but then I changed my preferences then ran the search again and it told me that there weren't any results.

:dabs: Gotta work out the kinks, I suppose.

It is very clear that it is still in its infancy stage. Searches are not impressive compared to Google searches with the same search input. Time will tell if it truly can compete with the almighty giant.

Thanks for the link though. I am sure a lot of people will be watching its progress with great interest.

Yeah, it has quite a way to go. The fact that she comes from within google, and probably familiar with its inner workings though makes me wonder how much google insider knowledge she might implement for her own site's benefit.
