Whew. I just got done watching Michael Haneke's "Funny Games," and this is a very initial reaction, but I'm blown away. I wouldn't hesitate in calling it brilliant, subversive, exciting cinema, and it got me thinking: what movies take a very in-depth, analytical look at violence, how it interacts with society, its allure, etc.? I came up with some choices; any others you'd add?

- Funny Games (Haneke, 1997)
- The Conversation (Coppola, 1974)
- Le Samourai (Melville, 1967)
- Taxi Driver (Scorsese, 1976)
- A Clockwork Orange (Kubrick, 1974)
- Bonnie and Clyde (Penn, 1967)
- I Stand Alone (Noe, 1998)
- The Game (Fincher, 1997)
- Hero (Yimou, 2002)
- M (Lang, 1931)
- Macbeth (Polanski, 1971)
- Princess Mononoke (Mayazaki, 1999)
- Rashomon (Kurosawa, 1951)
- Rear Window (Hitchcock, 1954)
- Sling Blade (Thornton, 1997)
- The Wild Bunch (Peckinpah, 1969)

- Hero (Yimou, 2002)

Meaning the mandarin film Hero (Ying Xiong)? That show wasn't even violent all they had were sword fights and arrows, it's only rated PG :P.

The movie "The Warriors" is a darn good flick with some nice beatings! It's an old movie from the 70's or 80's, I think, but it's fucking awesome! If you havn't seen it, you better DL it or rent it! B)

Best scene in the movie is were gang members from 2 different gangs beat the living shit out of each other in a subway restroom! They virtually kill each other with baseball bats, chains and knifes! And they also break the toilets and run the other guys heads into the wall! Kinda reminds me of "The Matrix" were Morpheus fights with Agent Smith in that bathroom!

Man Bites Dog is a French, fly-on-the-wall spoof about a serial killer being followed around by a camera crew.
Very sick indeed but it's a novel look at violence.

A number of really violent films are mostly in French. Man Bites Dog could get very violent at times and Irreversible can get very sexually assaulting at times.

Shallow grave movie about three flat mates that take in a boarder gets pretty messed up. BTW if anyone can explain battle royale to me it would be greatly appreciated other than crazy violence what the hell was up with that story line?

i cant believe noones said anything about my top film of all, Natrual Born Killers.

its agreat film with some sick but stupidly funny bits.. but the reason i mension it is that it looks at these 2 (cool as fuck but) crazy lovers & how the media uses there violence to create entertainment for the masses (happens everyday...watch the news!) & ends up turning them in to superstars.

i think its a great reflection on the worlds media's view on violence & how they love a good blood bath to boost rattings.

If by 'violence' we mean 'violence to decent film making', to 'the Irish accent itself', and to 'Brad Pitt's reputation', then yes, this film qualifies as exceptionally violent, as violent as the spasms of disgust that seized my intestines as I hurled the TV out of the window right after the hilarious/eye-mincingly pisspoor
gypsy-launched-from-picnic-chair scene.

"Fockin' Jaayzuz", as Mr Pitt may have had it.
