http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/picture.php?albumid=25&pictureid=218Microsoft will make the first public beta of Windows 7, the next version of its desktop operating system, available as a free download on Friday. There are several limitations, however, so even if you're excited and committed to trying out Windows 7 Beta 1 on your home PC, check out this list of rules, requirements and considerations.

We culled this list from a post on the official Windows blog and its comments, so check it out before taking the plunge:
http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/windows7/archive/2009/01/07/information-on-downloading-and-installing-windows-7-beta.aspx

* Windows 7 Beta 1 will be made available for a limited time during the day on January 9, 2009.

* Visit the Windows 7 page on Microsoft's website for the link.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

* It will only be made available to the first 2.5 million people to download the code. Demand will be huge, so prepare to act quickly.

* Microsoft has not announced a specific time on Friday for the release, but we can expect it will be later in the day so the west coast of North America isn't left out.

* Windows 7 Beta 1 will be offered as an ISO image. It's around 2.5 or 3 gigabytes, so you will need a DVD burner if you want to install it.

* You will be required to register before downloading so Microsoft can give you a product key.

* It will be build 7000.

* The beta will only support Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 upgrades. If you're not running Vista SP1 right now, upgrade before you try to install the Windows 7 beta.

* There is also a clean install option for the Win7 beta.

* There is no upgrade path from XP.

* There's only one version of the beta, which Microsoft says "is roughly equivalent the Ultimate edition of Windows Vista."

* The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1. You will probably be forced to go back to using Vista SP1 on August 1 (or maybe upgrade to Win7 Beta 2?).

* English, German, Japanese, Arabic, and Hindi versions will be available Friday.

* Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions will be available (except for Hindi, which only gets a 32-bit version).

* If you're upgrading, remember to back up your PC. It's a beta, stupid!

If you miss out, there will be other ways to get the beta in the near future. It's likely Microsoft will be handing out hard DVDs of the code at developer events and consumer conferences throughout the year. And of course, (cough) there's always BitTorrent.

Update on Windows 7 Beta Availability
Friday, January 09, 2009 3:53 PM

Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!

Download it from out nzb section and get a key from doing this

login here
https://login.live.com/ (http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=1116187&u2=https://login.live.com/)
then load this page
https://profile.microsoft.com/ (http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=1116187&u2=https://profile.microsoft.com/)
then keep reloading this page (change hXXps to https):
hXXps://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/productkeys/win7-32/enus/default.aspx
or this URL if you want the 64 bit key
hXXps://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/productkeys/win7-64/enus/default.aspx
either page should say "check back tomorrow" but eventually it'll give you a key if you keep hitting F5.

Or instead of F5 use check4change to get it

No more delay, everyone can get it no problem now

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

BTW I have been using it for a day now. Everything worked from the get go, I only had to install 1 driver (nivida driver and that was in windows update) that's it, I didn't have to go to my mobo manufacture like I always did in vista and xp. I just installed and it all works. It also is a whole lot faster, start up is almost instant, programs run seemlesly. I haven't hada program work yet, seems like if you want something, as long as it works for vista it is good.

Be wary 'bout that mp3 bug.

You can download the 32-bit (x86) version here (http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=1116187&u2=http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a754008b-d574-4e39-b4ba-67b859a242b7&displaylang=en) and the 64-bit (x64) version here (http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=1116187&u2=http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0c56bf3c-9370-4fda-b4c8-5dc63d55626d&DisplayLang=en).

I think it is wiser just to download it from newsgroups and get the key from microsoft

If anyone is looking for the patch to activate this forever, get rid of the testing purposes only, and send feedback link for 32bit and 64bit. Let me know. I'd post it but since it gets rid of the activation I don't think I should.

Anyone know if it's possible to revert back to vista without reformatting? I can't stand this OS.

HAHA you have problems all around. :-p

First of all you shouldn't have upgraded from vista to windows 7. For two reason; one being that "upgrading" always causes a problem (always reformat when installing a new os), and two you cannot revert back to vista without formatting and reinstalling it.

What you should have done was made a separate partition for windows 7 and tried it out.

I suggest getting use to windows 7 (being more stable and faster), or formatting. Good luck.

Yes, Restore the backup you made before doing the upgrade.
:P

Seriously, why would you do an 'upgrade' without making a backup?
It took me about 3 mins to download a norton ghost trial and 15 mins to make my backup before formatting and installing windows 7.

7 doesn't seem faster to me, actually more sluggish then vista for some reason. Guess I'll just have to reformat when I get a chance.

That's because you upgraded, upgrading is always bad.

works fine as dual boot with vista..

i cant confirm the sluggishness, the gui seems indeed faster on my testbox..
booting up and shutting down is faster as well..

but its called a "beta" so its actually alpha.. consider a windows OS beta as long as there aint at least one service pack, and really usable after SP2 ;)

i also found it less stable as vista - for example do resolution changes leave the screen black at times..

generally speaking, it really looks good, and im looking forward to 2010/2011, when there will be a stable retail release + patches.. until then, i'll stick to vista/xp and ubuntu/debian on my main boxes...

I did the upgrade the first time I installed it as a test and it worked fine.

What were your HW specs??

Also guys I cannot for the life of me find how to make my Win7 look like the screenshot link above
http://www.redmondpie.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/win4.jpg

EDIT: MEH! I found it, apparently it's not W7 but a longhorn prototype called the "doubledecker" (http://www.istartedsomething.com/20071206/double-decker-longhorn-taskbar/) taskbar. Well that ruined my day :eyebrows:

On a lighter note:

From the windows 7 blog: (http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/MainFeed.aspx)

Here’s where we stand
Saturday, January 10, 2009 7:24 PM

I know many of you have had issues with the Windows 7 Beta site over the last 24 hours. As you may have noticed the download site has been up and running smoothly since this morning. That said, we apologize for the inconvenience that it caused some of you.

Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit.

Thank you for your enthusiasm, interest and willingness to beta test. It has been great to see the positive early reviews and feedback. As you know, this is a beta product. We are working hard to get Windows 7 ready and right. Your input is a critical part of that process. Thank you!

I'm actually excited 'bout Windows 7. Kinda tired of XP and my 1,001 tweaks.

I'd like to go back to thinking it was all magic again and my new XPS (:naughty:) is certainly capable of handling it.

Feel sorry for all the poor bastards who went straight to Vista. :-P

As tesco I think was trying to say, as long as it is build 7000, yes it is the same.
