1993 & > Underground BBS took over and sysadmins ruled the world

1995 - 1998,9 Public hacked FTP servers began to flourish spreading warez from small warez teams (D.O.D - CLASS - SWAT...) to couriers and to public throughout the IRC network.

2000 - 2002 Many warez targeted web sites were created, distributing the most popular files at the moment. IRC servers still packed with many downloaders. Warez groups starting to get busted and fade away.

2002 - 2003 The generation K++. Many novice and intermediate downloaders began to collect songs, movies and even full version programs/games. FTPs starting to fade away. IRC still at the same level.

Now (Mid September 2003), what do you think is going to happen to public and private FTP file servers?

They're gonna be used like right now, to distribute files legally, or "hacked" to distribute files illegaly (until the ftp admim notices the hack)...

i.e.Many sites use ftp servers to distribute files like patches, freewares, demos...

public/private ftp servers will linger for a long time. The incur less overhead than a webserver due to a lighter protocol.

I have several ftp servers (all legal of course) out on the net.

ah Nemo, i forgot to add the edit by line... i changed the link to the site to be honest.. 1st of all no DDL are allowed which ftp is imo and 2nd the paying (comercial interest)...
Although i have to admit there is a "light" version possible which don't need to be paid for it gives me the impression it's ment to be comercial advertising.

finding warez on an ftp site is quite tedious so i just use kazaa, soulseek, and irc. but when im downloading an update for a prog i have, 99% of the time its from an ftp server.

Nothing is going to happen. The scene will go on. FTP and ratio servers have been around since the dawn of time, and they will continue to prosper. ;)

OK I am gonna watch what I say cuz I don't want to be determined as a spammer but ES5 has a list of FTP sites in the forums. And I've used them and love them. There quite reliable and work well. Got lots of Music and Movies there as well as the latest version of Sygate, Nero 6 and more. So if I can't find it on K-Lite I look at the FTP servers posted on the ES5 forums because they are in Palistine and you don't have to worry about getting busted.
