in 4 years, ive had 3/4 ball mice, and one optical fail, the optical one because the wire split after about a year an a half.
and one hdd fail after about 3 year, though it may still be useable

Yeah, ball mice here too. I had to use a particularly crap ball mouse last week, i do not miss them one bit- optical is the way to go.

Otherwise, i had one dvddrive go 'funny', causing my system to hang at detecting ide devices. And a PSU, although that's not on your list, which died in a puff of smoke. Finally i had to replace a cpu fan that was sounding a bit dodgy.

ball mice suck <_< never going back to them
had 2 sets of ram fail on 2 different computers in 4 years other than that any failures have been my fault :P

With mice, you get what you pay for. I've only ever had 1 mouse fail, and that's because I stood on the cable. But the usual problem with mice is keeping the ball AND the rollers clean. Occasionally I find it necessary to dismantle the mouse to clean the accumulated gunge off the rollers, but other than that it's just a case of occasionally washing the ball in warm soapy water.

Interestingly, one of the biggest causes of failure with mice is wax, usually caused by some kind thinking person deciding that the mouse mat would be much better if it was occasionally cleaned with furniture polish. Cleaning that stuff off your mouse mat and the ball/rollers can be a nightmare. :D

Apart from that, the only component failures I can remember (on my own systems) have been a hard drive and a power supply.

Most external components are supposed to be the least likley to fail eg the Moniter which is said to be the most reliable component, but anything that contains any amount of moving parts will automaticly have a life span. Anything else will die either because of overheating or faulty or burnt out microcomponants.

2 hard drives (about one year each)

2 PSUs (between one and three years)

1 CD-Rom

1 monitor (lasted approx 5 years)

the monitor burned out after several years, which sucked but at least it lasted for a while. the CD-Rom broke because one of its power pins came out when i disconnected it from the PSU.

the hard drives and PSUs died completely on their own-- i'd have to say that these are the worst. they were name brand parts, not generic, but they still died just from poor manufacturing quality or heat/electrical tolerance or sumfin. i'm really disappointed in the quality of hard drives & PSUs nowadays.

Yeah, thats the thing with non branded parts, fans are the biggest culprits for that especially in graphics cards. In order to cut costs they have to use the cheapest fans available some of which can cost less than £1 and often fail on arival resulting a lessoned life span.

I've had my mouse and keyboard from my '95 Toshiba go, although I think the keyboard still works, (with the exception of the space bar. <_< ) And, my keyboard from the late 99 Machine I have.

For me its been CD drives for varying reasons.

Had a 64X CDrom drive blow on me... it made a *fzzt* sound, there was a thin wisp of smoke from the back of the box and the smell of burnt plastic... turned out to be a crapped out power lead... bleh.
That's what you get for buying noname parts...

I got a Sony 48X to replace it... and an LG burner too, but thats getting old now.. only has an 8X burn rate, so DVD/CDRW Combo drive is going to replace that in a month or 2.

Recently had to replace the mobo too.. that sucked, only had it a year and a half.. Oh well, I guess it was time to upgrade, anyway... looks like my PC thought so too.

I've had a hard drive burnout as a consequence of my PSU's fan snuffing it

and my brother's PSU just plain exploded

1 52x lg cdrom about 8 months old .. the store i bought it from would not honour the 1 year manufacture warranty(i lost the receipt who keeps them).Any how thankfully durring manufacturing they put a sticker on with the date its made.So i went straight to LG ,I had to take it there personaly, I argued and they finnaly honoured there warrant..they sent me one 3 weeks later..The funny thing was they sent me another 2 months after(wish it was a dvdrw oh well) :D

Countless HD failures and crashes...

Just don't feel like buying expensive SCSI drives so I let those crappy ATA drives run 24/7 :D About once or twice a year I gotta get new hard drives. :P
