To do this, you need to.

1) Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Uncheck box 'Hide Extensions for known file types'.
2) Go to your program files folder. In the folder of each program, look for the executable file. eg. 'Age of Mythology' = 'aom.exe' .
3) Right click on the exe and create a shortcut.
4) Right click on the start button and you'll see your start menu highlighted in explorer. Click on programs and either navigate to existing folders, or create new ones.
5) Cut and paste the shortcut you created earlier. You can rename the shortcut, so instead of 'aom.exe', you have 'Age Of Mythology'.
6) Never ever use that piece of sh!t windows washer again.

What version are you using?
In the latest version in the wash items section, there is the option to clean start menu history and start menu click history, I don't know if that is what is causing the problem though.

What the hell window washer dosent suck, the only thing better is system mechanic. Why wouldn't you need it, its a one click clean. To do it yourself is a waste of time. I gusse a re re like you, likes to do things the hard way.

If you don't want cookies, delete them from your cookies folder. Temporary files? Delete them from your temp folder.

Okay people lets all calm down.Peace.

First of all sorry I didn't reply before but I was at work.

The version that I'm using is 5.0.0.(build 5.0.0.1) which I have just downloaded and used for the first time ever.

I like to try new stuff and other than messing up my start menu it cleaned 500mb of crap from my system.

Although I agree that I like to have control of my system I also like to make things a little easier as well.

Yes I am using xp pro but I haven't lost my programs in Start>All Programs, I have lost all the programs that are frequently used.
How do I put them back????
I thought that when you opened a program it then goes into this list.If that's true then it's not working and that's what's pissing me off as this list is empty and is staying empty.

Any ideas.

Solution: Uncheck Instrumentation.
