Gates helps cops fight kiddy porn

Microsoft and the Toronto police are now developing software that will make it easier for police to investigate the dissemination of child pornography on the Internet. They hope to complete an initial version of the software in a month. The software is designed to store copies of all the images police find, creating a searchable database that can help them uncover similarities between cases. It can also analyze pictures and classify those that are child pornography, largely automating a job that consumes a huge amount of police labor.

A "really rotten day" at work in late January prompted a just-about-had-it Toronto police officer to e-mail a spontaneous plea to the world's richest man for help fighting child pornography. "To be real honest, I didn't expect anything back. I didn't even save the e-mail," said Det. Sgt. Paul Gillespie, a 25-year veteran of the Toronto force.

Microsoft Canada has already invested $600,000 Canadian ($450,000 U.S.) in the software project, which got under way in February, and does not know what the final cost will be.

The explosion in technology and the Internet have made the task of handling the exponential increase in child pornography almost impossible, police say.

"Three or four years ago ... the majority [of victims] would be 10, 12, 14 [years old] -- not to say that's better child porn, it all just memorializes criminal acts of the most heinous nature -- but in the last couple of years, we've just seen such young children on regular seizures -- babies, 2-, 3-, 4-year-olds."

...because you supply child pornography?

Hello, Bill Gates is helping to combat child pornography...You should be happy for Microsoft, not dissing, you sickos.

I guess I'm a bit older than most of you on here, my memory of Microsoft goes way back. Without them, a lot of what we are doing on computers today would not be possible. Does anyone remember the early DOS days? Dosshell? Windows brought computers to the masses, believe me, I've been selling comps for years, before and after Windows. It has been a revolution we are ALL benefitting from.

As for Bill, I don't know what that guy has to do to get the recognition he deserves. I think a lot of it is jealousy because he's rich.

Good on ya Bill, go get the arseholes!

Microsoft is in my view, a monopoly, and an evil one.

a few charities wont change that image.

Bill Gates should have done it without regonition as he IS the richest man on Earth and SHOULD be giving a lot more to help all the shit in the world.

He SICKENS me

How do you propose he did that? He already employs 200 people to give his money away. How would you do in his position?

He's giving away practically all his money in his will. Bear in mind that at the moment most of his money is in Microsoft stock not in liquid assets, so he can't access the money unless he relinquishes control of Microsoft. I think he's leaving around 400million to his family and the rest straight to charity.

I agree on the kiddy porn stance of course, BD....as you know I have two girls under 10 and would fucking stab to death anyone who dared to harm them....

But didn't Bill get the Windows concept from the Apple developers when he was working with Steve Jobs??

I think the word you were looking for was STEAL. In fact, isn't that how microsoft got most of its software ideas?

[Ella]But didn't Bill get the Windows concept from the Apple developers when he was working with Steve Jobs??

I'm not defending the tactics of Microsoft, I was defending the charitable donations of Bill Gates.

As to the Windows concept, Apple may have had the first application of the technology, but I think you'll find they also "stole" it, as Lynx would say. I'm pretty sure it was developed by Xerox, or someone, I could be wrong.

The point I was making about Windows was that, combined with the IBM compatible computers, it allowed the masses access by being easy to use. Selling computers before Window 3 was hard work, low numbers, and big profits, $1000 a comp profit in the early 90's. Windows brought the customers, prices came down, and more people got comps. If you think Apple would have done that, look at their prices. BTW, if it wasn't for Bill Gates, there may not be an Apple now.

To get back on topic, why was it left to Microsoft to put the money up? Good on them and Bill for doing it.

the ammount of money he donates is far greater then most including I know. you being a moron who knows nothing of that you are speaking on and should do the opposite and read or learn about a subject before attempting to touch on the subject because you now look like a idiot. but what do you expect from a close minded person from Canada? notice i did not say a person as in general but a CLOSE MINDED person. im 16 and speaking more logically then you. you seem older but sound younger then me.as for Iraq not IRAQI you moron *that alone shows how simple minded you are, dont even know what the correct name for a country is) that has to deal with the USA and Great Britian since they are the 2 countrys which liberated it.if he would to support or refuse to support he'd dig his own grave thus is why he is staying and not talking about it. guess why most music and movie star artist dont make comments like that. cause they can jepordize their image.

I always find it richly ironic when someone uses their PC as a platform from which to denounce Bill Gates.
JBR, your proclaimation of dislike would have a lot more creedence had you nailed a piece of parchment to the door of the forum.
Blaming Bill Gates for the ills of the internet is akin to blaming the Wright brothers for 9/11.
Even if you want to argue that his charitable donations are but a fraction of his personal fortune, it's still a whole lot more than anyone else seems to be willing to pony up.
