Winamp didn't really "mess up" your file types, it simply did what it was trained to do...associate itself with all the available file extensions.
Next time, right after you install Winamp, go to Options>Preferences>Setup>File Types and only check the extensions that you want WinAmp to play.

You can also do this (for XP users) to make system-wide changes by going into:

control panel>add or remove programs>set program access and defaults

...and then just configure which applications you want to open whichever file-types you wish.

(for XP users)

should be for XP sp1 users! as this is added by sp1!

Open Media Player.

Go to Tools and select Options.

Click on the File Types tab, and check all the boxes you want associated with it.

After that you should have the old-sytle icons back (you may need to reboot).

Did you try rebooting after your changes? Sometimes the icons won't change until you reboot, but it'll still open with the app you just associated it with.

Yeah, I was wrong. For some stupid reason MS made all video icons look the same with newer versions of Media Player. If you want different icons for different video types, you need to install an older version. I have both 6.4 and 9 installed. I keep video files associated with 6.4 for a double-click, but if I want to use 9 I just right-click on a file and select 'Play with Media Player'.

so 6.4 is the version with diffrent icons?

Yes, you can get it here...

XP might tell you it's incompatible during installation, but I haven't had any problems with it.

its already in all versions of windows
just go start>run and enter "mplayer2" without the quotes

For an even older version do the same as above replacing mplayer2 with mplay32

 I do too. I think it's nice to be able to see at a glance whether a video file is mpg, avi, or wmv.
