i just thought that if you made a rule where people had to have a minimum number of posts before starting new threads. this might coax people into seeing how the forum should work, so there wont be 20 requests for matrix revolutions in the wrong place

I like this suggestion. I don't know if it's possible to set it like that.

Maybe even set it so that if someone starts new threads in the wrong section a few times then they cannot start new threads for a while.

Hmmm that is wishful thinking.
On any forum it's never gonna happen without a LOT of moderation and housekeeping.

i think ive seen it before. it doesnt need moderation because its scripted

but then there would be lots of pms to mods or a need of a guest room because
members would be like why cant i start a new thread...

GameFAQs has something similar ot this with their karma system. There are limits to how many topics and messages you can post according to what level you are at.

I'm not sure if this type of thing could be applied to this board though.

I think it's a strange idea. What if a new member needed help (on a topic that hasn't already been covered), and then they couldn't start a new thread to ask for the help that they need?

but there would be pms sent all over the place or they would be asking about it in other threads

Excellent point.

Good Idea! I like it especially other than the only point that others mentioned that what if they want to start a thread which hasnt been answered before. Well you could ask a mod but that will be too much for them to handle everyone.
But the thought that they should at least get familiar with the board and the other topics that exist before pasting the same thing is an excellent thought.

Umm, on second thoughts, they can still post it in lounge because the posts there arent counted. So if they still have to start something they can start in the lounge and if the mods think its worthy enough then they can move it to the appropriate sectons. Otherwise uslesss topics/spam collected in the lounge only instead of all sections like we have been seeing in a while.

This might also help curbing down some bots that might come on board for random posting like they do in some forums and chat.

No, I don't think so.

I think he's talking about spam as in advertizing or posting nonsense.

Accidental i guess what he might have meant was, few people dont read the rules and start promoting their websites. They are just not aware of. Apart from few clumsy people on the board whom we have, a normal person who knows its not allowed wont do it hence doing it unknowingly is accidental. :) At least, thats what i make of it.

Cheers!

I think it would be unfair to punish all newcomers just because there are a few silly people who come in here to promote their own commercial websites.

so true so true and its not even n00bs who advertise and what is gonna stop them after they meet a certain requirment for postin?

TheDave

i meant accidental because a number of noobs come in and all post the same post. often in movieworld. because they dont bother searching for it and dont know to use requsts for requests.

yeah i understand waht you mean it would be cool if it worked but i think there would just be tons of n00bs posting in random topics like why cant i start a thread and stuff

I agree to that. Its quite not easy...

I.am
11-06-2003, 09:02 PM
Not easy but doable. :P You could make a pinned topic in Lounge "Why Cant I Post a New Topic" and mention there about the criteria about the minimum posts. In Lounge they can still start so thats not a problem.
Whatever change comes it does require effort, nothing is done overnight because of a thought. Guestroom was removed everyone started posting against it. But now people think it was a good idea. Whenever an idea is suggested it meets opposition first before meeting any people who like it. Why is that? Or we know that it wont happen so why to support it anyways :P

I dont know what the admins or the mod think about this, but to me it sounds a fair idea. (Although I dont know how many newcomes we are getting -actual statistics so that this is rule is actually effective and not something that is lying around uselessly) :)
