How To Configure Firewalls\routers?

I've been getting that dreaded yellow light on bittorrent for quite a while. Any help\ideas on how i can poke a hole in my firewall?

How do i figure that out?
I havnt installed any myself but I dont know if the guy who set-up my computer did.

If there&#39;s a soft firewall running there must be an icon in the systray. Click it and see what make it is (eg ZoneAlarm or Sygate or Kerio or Nis or Blackice)

the only thing in my sys tray that could have a firewall is norton. Does norton 2003 have a firewall? I couldnt find any firewall options in it(and i did a search in norton help, didnt have anything about firewalls).
How would i know if i had a hardware firewall?
whats a router? does it refer to the internet service provider?

1) it depends on if your norton 2003 is just anti-virus or the internet security version. if you have the internet security version , then it comes with a firewall.

2)a router u say ... how many computers do u have? if u have more than 2 then most likey u have a router which is allowing internet for the computers in your network.

And most routers have a build in firewall (therefore the phrase hardware firewall as the router is hardware and something like Norton internet security&#39;s firewaal is a software firewall as well as ZOneAlarm).

i have norton firewall installed, how to i configure it so that i can open ports 6881-6889 so that i can get more than 40kbps on bittorrent which is what im getting now on fast cable :angry:

I don&#39;t know NPF but isn&#39;t there an option you can set rules or ports in internet connection (doubl click the systray icon)?
Isn&#39;t there a build in help function which explains how to set ports?
Isn&#39;t there any info on the Symantec site?

My norton 03 must be an internet security version since it has the option to scan emails and to protect yahoo messenger but i cant find a single thing about firewalls in options or its help files.
I only have one computer. I seem to be getting suprisingly (for my connection) high upload speeds but nearly nil download speeds. If i had a firewall wouldnt it limit my upload speed too?

Doesn&#39;t have to. Depending on the standard rules in your firewall. Although I must say that for many people it is normal to have a low download speed and high upload speeds. Lot of answers in other topics sate that you&#39;ll have to be patient, although imo 40 KB/s is not bad to get with BT.

Did a quick search on Symantec page. Try the following link. Maybe it is worth it.

for every 4MiB im downloading im uploading 40MiB.
Im not getting 40 KB/s thats someone else, Im just getting about 1KB/s Dl and 5-9 KB/s uploads. these higher uploads are slowing down my download(i have very a slow dsl connection). but if i try to reduce the upload limit my downloads seem to stop altogather. im thinking of giving up on this bittorrent thing.

and set it to 56k/isdn

me sucks for bittorrent, you can&#39;t have as many open connections as with xp or 2kpro
I sugesst you upgread to 2kpro or xp

some dude on the last page said I can have a router only if i&#39;ve got more than one computer, and since i only have one i guess i dont have a router.

I limited the upload speed to 3 KB/s and the speed has improved (shadows client). I could kiss you, but i wont :D
link doesnt seem to work though, i&#39;ll be getting a &#39;timed out&#39; any time now.
