Is it normal to get higher uploads than downloads on bittorrent?

as time goes by your dl will increase speed

Of course that is possible u are uploading to more than one person as well as downloading but your download will pass it when it gets more seeds or leechers.

lol that often happens with me on emule. i be uploading at like 50Kb/s and my download will be like only 30Kb/s :) well thats just how it is ;)

That's good though before I knew how to get better speeds I was gettin like 5-15 kb/s

How do you get better speeds???

I get my best speeds using shadows experimental torrent software and matching the settings to my internet connection.

I have ADSL 576 and set the torrent to DSL/cable fast.

Speed for a single download peaks around 40 kbps.

A 1.53 gig file took 16 hours today.

BitTorrent, like practically ANY other file-sharing program, cannot download IN TOTAL faster than everyone is uploading IN TOTAL.

So if 10 people are uploading at 10 KB/sec each (total = 100 KB/sec), if there's 10 downloaders then on average the downloaders are only getting 10 KB/sec each.

If you're getting faster download rates than upload rates on a POORLY-SEEDED Torrent, then it's probably at the expense of others. THEY are almost certainly uploading faster than they're downloading.

Due to upload failures, it's possible for there to be 100 KB/sec total upload speed but only ~90 KB/sec total download speed. This happens often if people haven't limited upload bandwidth to what their connection can sustain.

Dont let bittorent untilise all your upload as it does affect your download, my upload is 128kb/16KB if you consider protacol overheads 10 -15 % and your isp bandwidth i have about 12 to 14 KB to play with.

Using http://www.netlimiter.com i set it to around 9 - 12KB upload limit and find downloads speeds alot faster

I had the same problem for a long time. Turned out to be my ISP's fault.
This free bandwidth test can tell you what your potential upload/download speeds are: http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest
It's pretty accurate.

This is another reason why I LOVE Bittorent 3.3
It shows in mb how much you've uploaded and downloaded, so I know for sure if I've given enough back to the community. Because of my good speeds, I always give more than I've taken.

im getting an average or 0KB/s DL and 8KB/s upload. I have a slow cable(or dsl) connection which normally gives me an average of 6 KB/s dl.
this really sucks

Same here downloading a game. Connection is a slow dsl but the downloadspeed won't go over 6 KB/s while uploads go over 19KB/s.
Let the computer stay on all night but it hasn't increased my downloadspeed. On the contrary; uploads went even faster and download freezed.
But then again, if I really want to have the game as fast as possible, then I should buy it.

tried it. doesnt do much for me. Infact it seems like the downloads stop altogather

its normal, as there might be more leechers than seeders.hence u might have a bit of data many dont have.hence the higher upload.

well, i usually download 200kbs and even more
but usually dont upload more than 30 kbs
and believe me I WISH i could upload faster than i download, id have PU everywhere now!:)
though if u r uploading faster than you download, and the dl speed is >150
then you shoud try downloading from a different place cuz downloading 15kbs and uploading 20 for an example sux.
it usually happens when you dl rare files from public trackers.

The less seeder to leecher ratio there is... the slower the overall speeds will be. Since there are not enough people feeding the swarm many times.
Alot of times when people choke their bw, they are not giving out the peices they should be to help the swarm speeds grow. Ex: You get peice a and peice b and your sending 3k and getting 300k. Bob comes into the swarm and wants peice a and b but your only sending him 3k. If everyone chokes their outgoing bw its ussually worse off for the swarm. Especially if the uploader has his client set to super seed mode.

Hmmm:

ADSL for us punters is asynchronous: Now its all very complicated stuff.

The upshot for us is that We can achive the quoted speeds if we are ONLY downloading or uploading.

If we are doing both the the download speed decrerases as the upload speed increases eventually as upload reaches saturation the download speed aproaches zero. On an 8-meg connection typically the two meet at around 30-40 KB/s

If you want to test this you need to do the following:

1. Find a good torrent with loads of seeds and large enough to run a while(so you can see the results)

2. Make sure you have hacked TCPIP.SYS: this allows your pc to make more than the default 10 connections (assumes WinXP SP2) search google for "EventID 4226: TCP/IP"

3. Check the BT client u use and figure out how you limit the upload bandwidth. For this test limit upload of the torrent to 1KB/s.

4. Dissable other torrents till you have tried this test

5. Remember Contention ratios: Other users share ISP bandwidth with you, best to do this Early morn or late at night.

6. Once your have seen your download speed reach dizzing heights and u got your fastest ever downloads you need to play with the upload limit to find balance: remember as was said previously in this thread: If everyone limits their upload to 1 KB/s the result is problematic as on average you might get upto 10~15 connections for a single torrent at anyonetime 15 x 1 = 15 mate! so make a sensible choice please for all our sakes.

Wow: sorry for the ramble, hope it helps. and yes I wimped out of the technical reasons for Asynchronous behaviour. but hey am drunk and really none of us care we just want the buttons to push to give us what we want as fast as we want.

later dudes.

Good tip |theONE| - just one small note of correction, if I may...

The A in ADSL stands for asymmetric - ie different upload to download connection rate.

All DSL flavours (eg SDSL (Symmetric DSL) are asynchronous; definition:

"In telecommunication signaling within a network or between networks, an asynchronous signal is one that is transmitted at a different clock rate than another signal."
Source: TechTarget (http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci211605,00.html)

This seems to be a very common, and oft quoted misconception, not just here but across the web - but I hope I have not trodden on anyone's toes or annoyed anyone in clarifying this... just trying to help :)
