I've read about several cases where users received cease and desist letters for downloading movies from Pussytorrents.

Anyone heard about that too?

I don't remember any cases myself. Since PT is almost perpetually open for signups, I'm not surprised, however.

I never had one (and I'm pretty sure my account there is long expired) but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Pussytorrents is one of my favorite trackers and I have yet to receive any letters.

Did not happen yet.
But if it does, what should I do ? Reply, look for a lawyer, discontinue my account ?

Smash your harddrives and get a lawyer ASAP. DO NOT CONFESS ANYTHING.

Set yourself on fire, they can't prosecute a pile of ashes (it's not like Apple would be coming after you)

I think the best measure is not to reply, and consider getting extra "protection" for your torrenting (OK, that sounded a bit icky), for example an IP filter if you aren't using one already.

Weren't you from Brazil? If I'm right, I doubt they'd sent a letter in the first place. :P

Good advice.

Very bad advice.

I managed to get three cease and desist letter copies from law firms who collected IPs from Pussytorrents. Don't even think that you can protect yourself with any sort of IP filter. All you need to collect IPs in a swarm is uTorrent and any(!) IP hence a random internet connection. No IP filter will protect you against this.

new to downloading from torrents ..

first of all , what is "cease and desist " letter ... is it from IS P ?
It's basically a "pay or else" scheme brought to you by greedy lawyers and production companies who see it as an additional income. Your ISP has nothing to do with it but is forced to hand out your address if a judge decides it. It depends of course on your country and the legal situation there.
They pretend to protect copyrights when it's really all about making a quick buck. It's a shame that the law is on their site.

If you're from a country where these letters are popular the only advice is to stay away from big public sites.

Isnt this site the porn site run by torrentleech? If so it wouldn't surprise me since they have the same issue on TL also.

Very bad advice.

You should actually reply, then? "I didn't snatch anything", "yes, I was pirating porn", "no u"?

I never said IP filters are flawless or anywhere near 100% effective. It's clear that not all "bad" IPs are known, and that they constantly change. But using a well-reputed one is certainly better than torrenting "naked". Hence my advice.

Yes, but the difference is that Pussytorrents have open signups all the time, while TL is invite only. And the Pussytorrent userbase is considerably larger, too, around 350k.

Doesn't surprise me a site like Pussy would start getting such letters. For those who have been reading the news, the porn industry is now the major suer. And seeing Pussy is a de facto public tracker...

Where did you get that figure from? I'm just curious as I don't remember ever seeing stats there, or on TL (thanks to the Internet Archive I do know they had them back in the day, though).

I'm guessing disabled users would be disabled from the forums as well.

Taken from the site news a few days ago:

2011-05-30 - STAFF WANTED :)

Ever wanted to be part of a HUGE community (currently 300k+ users!!!)

I remember the figure (350k) to be mentioned in older news, too, if I'm not totally mistaken.

Thank you both! I haven't logged in recently, so I didn't spot the announcement, and I don't read their forums either.

I am not surprised, since it is semi-private site.

Five more cases. 800€ per movie. Be warned and don't download from pussytorrents anymore. Especially if you're German.

Use TrueCrypt on all your drives and the system one.

They cant do shit without actual physical evidence.

Or/and use VPN.

ca_aok

The evidence they obtain is via internet records, not from your hard drive (in general). Truecrypt won't do anything (though it's a good idea for other reasons). But yes, a VPN/SSH Tunnel/Proxy helps.

If they are only targeting german porn, I'm on the safe side. They have the worst porn possible. Yuck.

All they need is your IP collected in a bittorrent swarm.

Haven't logged there in ages. There are so many better trackers/ddl boards than that crap. The only thing that separates them from most of the torrent trackers are their bestiality packs.

All they need is your IP collected in a bittorrent swarm.

This IP can be only used to get a court order. To actually build a case a prosecutor needs a real evidence.
Otherwise one's lawyer will get their asses fried in a counter suit in a second.

They use fear tactics with all these IP addresses. it doesnt mean shit
