Here is my little guide to dc++ :

Download the programm here : http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/

Installing the programm should be very easy !

Next option is to make your settings : nick , email (optional),description (what your sharing etc ) and connection ( so other users know what connection u have ), active or passive ( passive means your using a router firewall - important as users with firewalls can not browse and dl files from each other ! )

Downloads : the folders where your downloads go to - please do not share this folder as noone likes incomplete downloads !

Public hub list URL - add one of these to that blank space :

Ultimate Hub Search Engine list. Many doubles and outdated stuff. *Extremely unstable* - not recommended. (9000+ hubs)

ImperialNet. Seem VERY unstable atm., try twice! Very strict on which chars gets through. (2500+ hubs)

Sid's. Stable, rather fast. Cool list! (2000+ hubs)

The "original" Neo-Modus DC list. Stable.

The Finnish Hub List. Stable, small(ish), very nice. (110+ hubs).

The German Hublist v2. Stable, small (50+ hubs).

>http://cdinfo.org/PublicHubList.config< Russian HUB's list. Stable, quite small (15+ hubs).

-----SEARCH ENGINES-----

The Ultimate Hub Search Engine: http://www.dchubs.co.uk/ (1/3/03: 10000 hubs, still needs a cleanup!!)
Use above searchengine to find your national servers too!!

Do it with brains, 4600 hubs in DB, brilliant hublist filter linksystem: http://www.dchub.org (Under development, static!)

Another under development (hopefully): http://www.clones.tk/ or http://clones.no-ip.com/hubs.htm (1/3/03: 3507 hubs, long-time static!)--------------------
Back-up lists:
--------------------

>http://dreamland.gotdns.org/PublicHubList.config< (.bz2 too)
'Back-Up' DreamLand. Worx very well too atm.

USE's list in text format, same address.*Extremely unstable* - not recommended. (9000+ hubs)
Lists offline ATM:
-------------------

aMutex. Very changing, very fast. (~600 hubs) Very missed.

Axllent. VERY extensive. (2000+ hubs) Very missed too.

BarbieParadise. Very cool, very slow. (1800+ hubs) Where did they go?

The German Hublist v2 & Back-Up. Down atm. See info at http://www.german-hublist.de.vu/

Important : when you add one of these please remove the < and > signs otherwise the list will not download !

If one of those lists doesnt work then try another - sometimes the sites are down !

Sharing : add folders that You want to share . Upload slots - leave only as many slots open as you are capable of handling with your connection - as a rule allow 5 KB/s per slot. Dc++ allows you to connect to as many hubs that żou like but hubs also have rules - mainly to leave 2 slots open per hub that you connect too.

Here are also some guidelines as too make your stay on dcc++ enjoyable :

when entering a hub please read the rules first ! (some hubs dont allow porn for example , others only movies etc) - do this helps you not get kicked out of a hub.

When the hublist is downloaded You can also see a description of the hubs and some rules about it : minimum share , connection type etc .All hubs set a minimum share limit : 1gb/2gb/5gb/10gb/50gb/100gb etc -some even have no share limit so its up to you what hubs you want to get connected too. This is all done to ensure that You really share stuff and not just leech.

On a side note - nearly all ppl on dc++ hate leechers and will report you to an op - most likely you will get kicked and banned so dont think about getting a hacked dc++ prog as mentioned in another thread on this board .The hub owners have special dc++ Programms and bots that check for these leecher clients - and believe me all get found sooner or later (ip banning is also possible ).

Dc++ is really huge , there are loads of hubs out there ( a hub is a programm set up by the owner on his pc /server) , so when u search stuff you will only find stuff that is in the hub you are connected too .If you dont find what your looking for you may have to connect to a different hub !

So i think that should be enough information too get started - 1 more thing though if you have any problems/questions this command may help you while you are in a hub - !faq (a second window pops up with a list of frequently asked questions and answers - you could also ask an op as they will also be able to help you - thats what they are also there for , not to just kick ppl and check filelists !

You are too kind sir, these newbies have it made... when I was newbie myself I have to learn everything myself from scratch.
DC++ is decent p2p and is alway being put down by lamers and basically narrow minded folks who think whatever most people use is good.
I use to use it 24hrs a day nonstop but till theseday i still use on a daily basis but not as frequent thought. Still, an overlooked p2p as for lamerz of IRC elitist as some would claim it. sad right? :D :D :D

thnkx mates , just trying to help as i like dc++ a lot ,Who knows maybe we will even get a dc++ forum cause some ppl mentioned that in the other pinned topic on general filesharing - missing p2p networks. Maybe this could be pinned to help newbies out :-"

Good intro, I think it should be stickied. :)

Here's (http://personal.inet.fi/surf/finx/en-faq.htm) another good FAQ .

Here's (http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/forum/) the main dc++ forum.

EDIT: Added forum link

Dc++ can be pretty excellent, certainly more hard-to-find stuff can be found there, compared to Fast-track.

The downside is that it isn't always very kind to those with small or otherwise limited hd:s.

Often hub:s won't accept you if you don't have X gb files shared, the stuff I've wanted have been on hubs requiring up to 10 GB:s shared files, and on my very crowded 40 Gb hd (with my current 160, this is no longer an issue), finding files worth sharing was a big problem, had I been prepared to act like the average KaZaA-user and share all kinds of unusable stuff it hadn't been a problem, of course.

Other limitations include restrictions like: "you have to share at least one farsight episode otherwise you may not download anything but this" (on a sci-fi-hub). :)
