View Full Version : Changing Filenames

Fatal Error

People that change filenames create a major problem for other users, as well as the network itself, for several reasons,it results in the SAME file having many different names, which results in that file being re-downloaded many times, by many users. This results in network bandwidth congestion.. which results in longer download times for YOU (do you hear me now?) it hinders "search results",you may not find the file at all,or you may get a file that has nothing to do with your search, you may just get the wrong file,or, the wrong media format(which pretty much makes that file useless) I am one of those people who like to add new content to my library and share it with other users;afterall, this IS what filesharing is all about.. right?? Yesterday I downloaded a 83Mb. .mpg file which wound up being corrupt and unusable (thank god I have Broadband) I came across this SAME file 5 more times, from 5 different users, each under a different filename (using Keywords that had nothing to do with the content of the file) This is very frustrating on Broadband.. but had I been on a "dial-up".. I would of been ready to commit murder !! So..unless there is a valid reason for changing a filename..DONT do it. Additionally, you should check the files that you download, if you find a problem with that file, you should REMOVE it from your library right away.. this will prevent its further spread throughout the network. (Thank god most users dont have .mp3 tag editors readily available to them) :) :)

come on man people do this cause of this stupid participation level crap they figure they can get a lot of people to download from them and raise their participation level if they just rename their copy of corky romano to some thing like Daredevil Xvid-dvd screener

Yeah these fakes just tick me right off, usually they can be spotted a mile off, looking at the extra info, length of the film, etc. Eventually they work out of the system I think, as the proper films come onto the network and people start to share these. I'm broadband aswell, but it still is a pain. thank god for avi preview. saves a lot of pain i can tell you.

Yeah..I know. I wasnt referring specifically to fakes. There are alot of legitimate files out there that have the same problem.. I just cant see the need for the SAME file having 62 different names... hence my comment on the .mp3 tag editor.. I can just see it now.. "Freebird" version 43265431(a) :) (d) (z) I just find this very frustrating, to say the least.. not to mention the horrendous waste of time and resources it consumes.

fair enough if its not just relating to fakes, but remember this, there are more than one person making copies of files from different sources and at different quality, file sizes, etc... so there are bound to be different file names, etc.. with millions of users on kazaa network, its not really surprising.

hmm I change all my file names to a 'artist - content' format like 'Capdown - Ska Wars.mp3' because lots of files i download have annoying names like 'punk-07- capdown_skawa.mp3' or something and i have like 500+ mp3's and would prefer them to be easy to read, is this one of the things you're complaning about?

I dont share any fake files tho ;)

I agree completely pw3n.
Fatal Error, if filename changing bothers you so much then I suggest you go see a doctor and get something for your nerves.
Considering the nature of KaZaA and the amount of infantile users
If I let it's anomalies bother me for so much as a second I would end up twitching and screeching in the corner.

The world is full of idiots and when there anonymous then they run riot
Do what I do and completely ignore them
There’re enough legitimate users and verified sites for KaZaA to work to MY total satisfaction.

a DareDevil screener so early?!? LOL but I have the CAM. It's okay quality. PM me and I can give you the the details or hashes (it is alright to PM hashes right? )
Here's a hint: it has 3 parts to it, ocj is next to the name and make sure our searching under DareDevil. All 3 parts are over 100 MB.

A MOD can also delete/edit this post if I have already given too much info.

all i can say on this subject is that i wouldnt change file names if people didnt call them things like...
nude porn hardcore girl f*cks and sucks while man watches and other girl plays with him as kid watches in background with while petting cat and drinking coffee from a cup that says i am the greatest.avi

and i will keep changing files names that have absolutly nothing to do with the contents of the file...

It's a good thing to change a fake's filename to suit its contents so that it can possibly inform a possible DL'er whether or not its a file they want.

No. not at all, thats a valid reason. Some people (actually, alot of people) however, diliberatly misrepresent the contents of a file either by title, or keyword. I mean you really gotta love it when you search by keyword and you come across a file that has 22 keywords, of which, maybe two may apply. I find this to be the case in an ever increasing numbers, but most apply to video or other types of movie files.. not so much on .mp3's One member commented in a post to my thread that I was "new", I got a chuckle outta that..while I may be "new" to kazaalite, I have to tell ya that I've been involved in P2P programs for a very long time. :D My bottom line here is that when you change filenames without a good reason, you hurt everyone that uses that network. Thats all I have. :)

I wasn't here wen there was a 'verified' section, but please get it back. I do feel sorry for you dial-up users. I got broadband this month and its heaven (well, to me anyway).

People who change names make me laugh though, thinking changing the title but leaving the filemane the same. They just dont get it do they? (i hope people here dont change names, i may of helped them out). Nah, you guys are great (benno's an example).

I find that even if I change a filename to what it should be (total club manager which is nba live 2001 is a good example) people still download it, taking the name in the search list as the real thing without looking down the list (by clicking the white cross-box) first to see if anyone called it anything else.

Even worse, if I tell them politely in a message that there downloading.... then say what it really is. Im either ignored or replyed after its finished with a 'oh, you were right'. Still, there loss.

Although most of what you guys are talking about is people misrepresenting files for their PL level, I thought I'd post my thruppence worth on a very related topic. :D
Wouldn't it all be very useful if their was some kind of naming protocol for files, like the hungarian format for win programming. It works so much better and although i doubt there's a single person out there totally happy with the format used it still is so much better than having no format.
My suggestion would be something like:

For tv
seriesname_seriesnumber_episodenumber_episodetitle

Film
filmname_year

MP3
Artistname_Album_Songtitle

Software would be harder as is more varied but something like
softwaretitle_version_build

Obviously these suggestions are only the tip of the iceberg and I am blissfully unaware of various limitations different OS platforms have on filenames eg length, punctuation marks etc

What does everyone think??

Ps apologise if sticking names together makes it hard to read for non English speakers :P

I couldnt agree with you more.. I totally understand the inherent problems in filesharing.. I was just expressing my opinion about something that will probably never change, and of which, nothing can be done about. I guess I was expressing my frustration out loud..sorry about that. No question about that. I even tried to message the individual that I downloaded the corrupt file from.. just to give them a "heads up".. but that was to no avail.. the user wasnt accepting any messages. I am the type of person that tries to avoid stereotyping in general.. but I have to tell ya I really think several times before I download a file from someone with a username like "default user" or "kazaalite user".. of course, any username can give you a bad file.. but I've had some bad experiences with those.

The problem is from two different people. The people that change the names, and the people that download the file from someone and dont delete it when they notice that it is a fake are the people to blame. If people would just delete these files when they get them we wouldnt have this problem. ;)

Yup..I agree with you 100% Certain things are inherent in filesharing and will never change, unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about it, so it will just continue to happen.. some people change filenames for very valid reasons..others however, deliberately misrepresent files.. for what? a participation level that doesnt mean squat anyway? Obviously, people who do this arent going to remove those files. "Regular guys" like you and I will, but there are alot of idiots out there. I have seen many very good networks fail over time..largely because of this very issue. Over time, the downloads will take longer and longer because of bandwidth congestion until the network is no longer viable and begins to lose its members to the next "latest and greatest" along with those same idiots to start their cycle of destruction all over again. If this continues..the end will be near.

I hate downloading movies. They are the worse at mislabeling files. But what I've heard is that movie companies actually have people doing that on purpose. They figure after downloading a movie 5 times, you'll give up. Well I'm sick of this! A good example of this is all the Lilo And Stitch movies. I know, who the hell cares about a cartoon. Yes, it was still in theatres at the time, but I ended up downloading several movies like Minority Report and Bad Company. And downloading 5 movies in search for 1 with a 56k, obviously I really want it. Had I actually wanted to keep the files, I would have relabeled them correctly, my 6th attempt was with WinMx, as bad as that filesharing program is, I got it.

I understand that the movie industry is all about making money, but this is how I see it: I pay a lot of money to go to the theatres, I pay to see that one movie, and if Im willing to go through all that, obviously Im gonna like the movie enough to buy it when it comes out on DVD. I buy it when it comes out, and guess what? I free up space on my HD and delete the file. I have so many video files that aren't on DVD, and may never get on DVD, and to the movie/tv industry I say =̃

I think its odd how movies are mislabeled with other movies, yet tv shows, mainly childrens shows, are really mislabeled porno.

for other types: stick with it
For overall: check the verifieds (there are other sites with verifieds)
