why do people have problems with cracks
even if you just type
crack
into google the firs response is altavista (sp), that the mack daddy of search engines, seems the only people that can't find something is someone who doesn't try

I just clicked on that link using Opera and a window popped up. It is called "Subscribe Newsgroups" and has what appears to be a search function, a drop down menu with the address of the above link in it, and a button that say new account.

Is this a newgroup reader built into Opera?

Under the above 3 things is a large scrolldown list of other similar addresses.

Can I use this to get newsgroup files? Or is this just a search engine for newsgroups themselves?

Thanks, TD

i think that the link has stopped working. i used it quite soon after it was posted and it was ok but isuspect that the provider has realised that people were hammering an unsecure addy for their groups and has shut it off (got connection refused in my ng reader tonight)

@Mant1s
It works most of the time.
Occasionally, you get connection refused, etc.
Probably too busy. Like this evening, but it's working again now.

@Tracydani
I haven't got Opera, had a quick look on their site.
I think there's a news reader built into opera, called M2.
But from what I could see, it doesn't have yenc decoding facilities,
so it wouldn't really be much use for binaries.
Your're probably better off going with a proper binary harverster like
newsbin pro or Xnews.
I've used both, and prefer XNews.
It's more powerful, but the interface is quirky.

i think he's talking safe from thr riaa. in that instance yes since you're only downloading stuff. even if you post movies and music they have no way of really knowing who you are and much like irc though there's a wealth of good shit on there since most people don't know about it or how to use and can't be arsed to learn there's no pressure for them to go after us.

well, unless you use an anonymous proxy then everything you post is tagged with your ip

however, no-one knows what you download except your isp (or your isp and your newsgroup provider)

I tried to set it up with xnews.

I followed the guide at slycks and put in the news server from my ISP

this is how it looks after retrieving the list from the server
Screenshot (http://server5.uploadit.org/files2/030104-xnews.jpg)

but when I doubleclick on a group to download the headers it opens a seperate window but doesnt display anything

Any help on what I do wrong?

sorry benno i don't use xnews. i think newbinpro is the best program you can use. if you install that i could help you but i've never used xnews.

I have newsbinpro installed as well but exactly the same happens

http://server5.uploadit.org/files2/040104-newsbin.jpg

could it be that the newsserver somehow filters the groups

hmm. when newsbinpro is green like that on a selected group it's downloading the headers. have you tried to download something in the group yet?

ah either what i just said or that's a group that really has nothing in it. if you want all the good mp3 groups click the groups tag, put in mp3, and then click the little box that says find groups with, and then you'll get a list of all the mp3 groups. look at how many articles they have and join the ones that interest you. then when you double click them they'll be headers to download. the first two groups your recomended to subscribe to by the program usually don't work.

it seems like the newsserver you're trying to download from doesn't carry a lot of binary groups

if you're not getting a the header list, chances are the server doesn't carry those groups

there's nothing you can do about that, except for trying to get a better server, sorry :(

it.comp.musica.mp3 scambi isn't going to give you any music. Only groups with the word binaries have music, movies, programs. There aren't any decent free servers left anymore. There's going to be a p2p program called Gnewsgroups soon which might help.

As you can see at the first screenshot this group was one of a few that showed any messages at all :(

thanks for the link, gnewsgroups looks good, really looking forward to it :)
