Download Finishing Incorrectly.

im having some problems with my downloads. when the files finish downloading they stay in .dat form, ie they dont turn into what they should be like .exe or .mpg
what can i do to stop this happening and is there any programs that can fix the files that i already have?

You could try renaming them to correct format or there again the file may be corrupt in which case delete them and try from more sources.
