on the idea of this topic, http://klboard.ath.cx/index.php?showtopic=89219
and the idea of jaigandhi5, i thought we could create a forum team, since i know there alot of members here and im sure we would have a pretty big team.
but its just the idea of what service to take, the 2 i know of are
Folding @ home (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/)
and seti http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/

or maybe create one group at each and leave it up to the indivdual what to pick?

what do you think?

Sounds good to me, often my pc is just web browsing and using messanger and other small resource apps, so it would be good to know that its potential would not be going to waste, and doing something to contribute to the world :)

Still need my game time though

Livy
12-25-2003, 01:01 AM
yeah. :D im sure it will reduce its useage the more u use the pc. so you can do your stuff without it interfering, and making you use it less.

RGX
12-25-2003, 01:12 AM
Excellent, so I can run a game and it only uses the idle cpu, rather than lagging up the games cpu usage? In which case, it would be great :)

Livy
12-25-2003, 01:15 AM
yeah, the folding at home has an option to change what percent cpu it uses, well max it can use, so u can just slide it down a notch to where u want, or try playing your game with it full and see if it automatically uses less cpu.

i have created a team with folding at home, team name is KLF http://folding.stanford.edu/teamstats/team34905.html

i also thought tht this is a lil help ful..

__JOHN_LENNON:

1. Doing ANYTHING stresses the life of your processor, but this F@H (Folding @ Home) uses spare CPU cycles, so you dont notice it while your playing BF 1942, or while im playing Halo. But if say you leave your computer for a bit, it will notice the free processor, and pick up the slack.

2. It really doesnt hurt your computer like I said above, I konw people that have this running on no less than 20 machines and have been doing for awhile.

3. Yes, I said 20 MACHINES. People take this very seriously, as over at AMDMB.com.

4. I have been folding for over a year now for the AMDMB.com team, and I think were maybe 5th or 6th world wide. I know from our forums that we have several people like I said with the 20+ Computers running 24/7 just to fold for cancer. (yes the electric bill gets raised a few ticks) I know that also we have taken donation on 4 complete machines, and then given them to people to they can be Folding for the team in the privacy of their own homes. I think were currently taking donations for the 5th one.

5. You guys should all get into this, haha Bigdawg, being about my age I know your parents have asked you around the house at times (whats your computer doing on right now, when your not even infront of it.) Well, atleast now you could say Fighting Cancer Mom! Heh, no but serious guys, every computer can help, even if its just a few work units a month. And we all have Spare CPU Cycles to spare because none of us are maxing out our PC all day. Half the time I have my PC on im just tinkering with some and I have WMP on and Folding @ Home.

6. Now everyone go download the folding at home command Client

so it does not affect ur gaming ;)

from the OC forum TEAM:

What are the system requirements for folding?
You will need to have the equivalent of a 200MHz Pentium to be able to process the work in time. The time limits for turning in completed work vary depending on the size and complexity of the protein that you are given to work on. NOTE: in some cases users have gotten even slower computers than this to fold and get units on time. The slowest i have seen get units in on time is a P166 mhz. If you think it is too slow to fold, give it a chance, what's that worse that can happen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

· Can I be a dial up user and still use FAH?

Can I be a dial up user and still use FAH?
Certainly. A 24/7 connection is not required to fold. The client only needs a conncetion to send and recieve work units. So, as a dial up user you can either connect whenever there is a work unit to send manually, or you can configure it to dial automatically (this was covered in part 8 of setup and guides)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

· Is there support for dual processors?

Is there support for dual processors?
The answer is still no to smp support, but it is possible to run more than one instance of the client. Yes, with the console (text-only) version. The best way to do this now is to install FAH twice in two different directories, and run them with the flag "-local". If two copies of FAH run in the same directory, they will interfere with each other, and will only lead to bad things. IMPORTANT- Make sure that each client has it's own machine ID (covered it part 7 of setup and guides)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

· Will running my computer at 100% 24/7 shorten the life of my computer?

Will running my computer at 100% 24/7 shorten the life of my computer?
No. Actually processors were/are made to run a 100% load all the time. Computers generally a better left on, with very little temparature fluctuation because as the chip heats up it expands and when you switch it off it contracts, this constant expansion and contraction of the cpu over a long period of time causes it to crack, meaning dead cpu! So if your cpu is well cooled with a good hsf(heatsink and fan) and it is at a constant temp at full load it is actually healthier for the chip!! Besides, you will get more done if you are folding 24/7!!.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

· Is there anyway to speed up my folding times?

Is there anyway to speed up my folding times?
You can, of course, overclock your computer to make it run faster, but then that's why you're at overclockers.com right? Some motherboards however don't support overclocking but don't worry if you have one of these board there is a shareware program called cpufsb 2.2.6 that makes it possible for you to raise your fsb.

If you have the Text Only version you can set the idle sensitivity for the client by right clicking on the client in the task bar and going to properties. When the window comes up click on the Misc tab. Go to idle sensitivity and slide it all the way over to "Low". This will make the client a little more aggressive with idle cycles.

NOTE: It has always been the rule that raw mhz is what makes you fold faster (whether 1800 is 180x10 or 150x12.) This might soon change though; with the coming of newer and larger and more complex protein that are more dependant on your memory. This is speculation at this point.

folding at home will not affect your pc performance, as it only has idle priority so it doesnt affect any other tasks you try to perform, it only gets what left of the cpu time. so u can game and it shouldnt make any difference

Ok guys im a bit confused.

Some of you are saying it doesnt eat up your processor and other people are saying it does.

So whats the correct answer ??

lynx
12-29-2003, 06:36 AM
I've got mine set to use 100% of available cpu capacity.

But it runs in low priority which means that if anything else wants the cpu it stops processing (the folding) temporarily so you don't notice it. Then it starts again as soon as the cpu is available.

Almost 37 hours cpu (not elapsed) time used now, 97% complete.

Folding FAQ (http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/faq.html)

Why does adjusting the core process priority via the task manager not affect its performance? How do I manually adjust the priority of the Folding@home core?

Currently when users try to change the priority of the core via the Windows NT/2000/XP task manager this does not affect how much CPU the core gets. The reason for this is that the work is done by the core thread, which is fixed to run at idle priority and is not affected by the task manager priority for the process (which displays as 'normal' by default). In order to change the priority manually users must use a program that allows thread-level priority adjustments.

I think that the points are determined by thwe size/complexity of the WU that you were assigned.
I've had a few 500 unit ones and a few 2500 unit ones and you get a lot more points for the big ones.

Also, I hope you got the command version, it doesnt effect games as much as the graphical version.

I have a t-bred 2600+ clocked at 2.3GHZ and 1GB of RAM.
I've been running the app full-time at 100% usage.
Since I don't really do much besides surf and occasionaly DL something I have lots of spare cycles to donate :P .

ive got the app basically running full time at 100% on both aswell, the 2500 is sometimes used for soem gaming but nothing , much. and sometimes emule, which doesnt use much cpu anyway i dont think.

Well I'm going to be off-line for a day or so pretty soon to screw around with some mods to my cooling setup so you can make up some points then.
If it works as planned I'll be clocked even higher though, so I'll be nipping at your heels soon.... :P

ive been noticing strange things lately : i have 2 cores - fahcore_78.exe and fahcore_65.exe , now the strange thing is when i have dc++ opened and im in my hub 1 core always trys to connect with the hub :o it wants to send an icmp to the hubs ip adress ! why should it want to do that ? and is it normal to have 2 cores ?

i have done numerous checks with all sorts of antitrojan stuff adaware etc. or could it be that the cpu is 2 big and it somehow brings the whole system crashing ? btw i also have 2 torrents going at the same time as well when i connect to dc++ and mozilla browser is on as well

Why not have a try? besides using Kazaa in free time, Seti is also a nice alternative.

smellycat

@nanotek
It's not normal to have two cores.

the fahcore_78.exe is the Gromacs modelling code.
the fahcore_65.exe is the Tinker modelling code.

Both Tinker and Gromacs are molecular modeling software used to simulate the folding process.

I think you've got a messed up setup.

I would suggest looking at FAHlog.txt in your folding directory.
That might give clues about what is happening.

Also ask in the folding forum (http://forum.folding-community.org/), in particular, the Client Side - Help (http://forum.folding-community.org/index.php?c=5) section of the forum.

I have to add something: I used Seti some time ago as Screensaver, and it is really nice and useful cause you can help a little - but sharing would help more, means running K-Lite, cause we need more sharing on our earth - then we could search for aliens ;)

As Screensaver it is nice.

i will complete work on the 3rd wu which is taking 400 steps then i will just delete and reinstall new i think that would be the easiest way to do it :) but i have noticed that there are some probs when the cpu is set too high and there are some conflicts as mentioned cause it always wants to connect to my dc hub <_<

Go ahead and restart your computer, it saves your work about every 5-10 min.

it'll be fine the now, if i change it i will have to change the folding page details aswell. im gonna phone up to get my webspace back, isp suspended it coz i had kazaa lite on it, and they got crap from sharman. but theyll give me it back, just need to get round to phoning up. then ill host it there, they are fast and reliable.

if you go into the config options, you can set it to how long u want it to save data.

the first WU I completed was like 2500 thingys long, and it took about a day to complete.

now I got another 2500 and it's already up to 250.

I don't understand it either Sparsely...I almost always get 2500 unit blocks, but the points I get for completing them is always different.

@Livy, do you remember where we were when we started out?
Ranked like 6800 or something weren't we?
Come quite a ways, haven't we?

I suspect that it gets a lot harder to move up the list once we crack the top 1000.

Yup.
When I first heard of this I joined the OC.com Team 32 ( ranked #3 overall).
There a guy over there who gets old, discarded comps and sets them up just Folding. Has like 40 of 'em going all the time.
Another guy rehabs older PCs and donates them to retirement homes and senior citizen centers. He has Folding installed on all of them, too.

Numbers matter.

Well I should be able to start contributing more now. I have had a lot of computer problems since Christmas and have had to re-install my OS about a dozen times.

Just did it again yesterday and if all goes well I won't lose it again. I was able to save the work on the last wu and it started where I left off this time.

May get another comp. hooked up later on, but it will be a while.
