Hibs beat Celtic 10 days ago, they're a decent side with a lot of young talented players.

I am sorry to disagree with you. Rangers and Celtic can occasionally beat some of the big teams down here. But remember that they would be playing a big team every week. How would they fare then? It is only recently in the Daily Mirror Martin O'Neill was complaining that his team was tired because they were playing in the Champions League. They are not playing anybody else the rest of the time. Rangers and Celtic are parochial and would never survive in the superior English League. :)

What a stupid and insensitive way to express yourself.

If you feel that Celtic are not up to the rigors of the English Premiership, fair enough. However to say it the way you did is idiotic.

I personally feel that, Finalists in the EUFA Cup. Taking around 80,000 to Seville with minimal trouble. A home support of 60,000 per week in one of the best stadiums in Britain. The EUFA supporters of the year and an additional income of somewhere around £15,000,000 from television money would give us a fighting chance of mid-table mediocrity.

This does not include the additional marketing opportunities that would be available. Why for example do you think Manchester Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal all want Celtic for testimonials. Maybe because it brings huge crowds and a better chance of TV coverage.

Just my opinion though.

My mistake - sorry about that.

Do you think we could face these great English Teams every week. Other than the top 5 or 6 who are they. Bearing in mind that the top 4 includes Fulham, a giant of international football.

Your league may well be strong(ish) at the top, but it falls away rapidly. For a great league, success in Europe has been fairly sparse.

Celtic or Rangers would not win the English Premiership for a long time, if at all. However, a top 10 finish is perfectly plausible. As someone pointed out earlier, the top 4 or so teams in the Premiership are very good, but then there is a sharp fall in quality as you move down the table.

It's people like yourselves that give the English the reputation of being arrogant twats. Luckily i know this reputation is deserved by only a few. 90% of the English people i know betray this stereotype and are actually a decent lot, some of whom i'd regard as close friends.

It's clear beyond reasonable doubt. In the past 12 months or so, Celtic have played two mid-table English teams in competitive matches. They scored 6 and conceded just one. They beat both teams in the ties which they played.

They have a massive, dedicated support base and, if playing in the Premiership, would be able to generate massive revenue - perhaps in time enough to rival the likes of Man. Utd. et al. The idea that they would desert their team is laughable - Parkhead was never empty during the days of Rangers' '9 in a row'.

They have a versatile, young squad, with a good mix of young Scots backing an experienced European side. They have one of the best managers in the business, who is coveted by Man. Utd., Liverpool and many other illustrious teams.

Ergo, to imply that Celtic would flop in the Premiership is to talk crap.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

the_faceman
12-27-2003, 10:19 PM
I'm a Rangers fan, and even i'll admit that Celtic would do quite well in the Premiership, and they would most probably fare better than Rangers. Neither of them would be relegated, especially given the financial boost that playing in the Premiership would bring. The TV package the Old Firm get at the moment is paltry and dwarved even by some of the Nationwide League's deals.

The fact that Rangers and Celtic would be playing tougher opponents week in and week out would lead to their improvement, not their demise from top-flight football. A true football fan would know this. It is having to play the same mediocre teams 4 times per year that has caused Scottish football to become stale.

As I said, I do not claim that Celtic would be expected to beat Man. Utd., Arsenal or Chelsea. However there is no other English side that Celtic would fear. As such it is preposterous to infer that Celtic would do badly in the Premiership.

How many English football team were involved in the semi-final stages of European football last year?

The point that a lot of people forget is that it is the Club which would be going. Not just the first Team.

The first team of both clubs would do fine and achieve mid table. Give them (the club) an extra revenue of £15,000,000 per year and ask them to compete with clubs that are losing money and have a fraction of the support. Not really a problem. Certainly over a few years

Yeah ...you better blink!

What I meant was, ALL kinds of teams are in the Champs League, so in my mousey-mind Scottish teams may have faced harder oppononts than English teams or ENglish teams got luckier more.

I would welcome Celtic to the English league expecting a very competitive match and wouldn't assume my team would simply walk over them because they're Scottish. :)

BTW - I'm a Port Vale fan :P
You will be able to take them on single handed then SamSam.

might i add during the time of ranger 9 in a row, parkhead had a 3 year waiting line for a season ticket. diehards? where would all our support go when we move down to the EPL? i know a boy who took out a grand loan to go to seville, he never had a ticket for the match or accomodation, his plan was to buy one when he got there, he never told his wife about the loan, so when he got home his bags were packed and waiting for him in the street. thats dedication to a team. payinng £500 for a plane ticket to spain for a one off match, sure enough we will most likely have to wait a few years for the next opportunity like it, but its not as if only a few thousand fans went. 80,000 graced Seville with their award winning behaviour and lack of trouble. whereas i know it is maybe unfair to compare the two but look at the last few european championships and world cups and the trouble caused by english hooligans. i am in no way zenophobic to the english, so i don't want any of you getting upset by this.

Rangers and Celtic will never play in England, and nor should they.

They are a Scottish team, and should stay there. Without the games against these two teams, the rest of the Scottish teams would be broke.

And who in England wants them? Which two teams would be willing to be relegated to accomodate them? What sort of arrogance dictates they should go straight into the Premier League anyway? If they wanted to come to England they should start in the third division.

BTW, were there any Scots in the Celtic team this week? They certainly didn't score!

I have no great desire to see Celtic play in the English League, neither would I object if it happened. Outside of the top 4 teams (incl Fulham) it is a poor league. I mean that both in terms of ability and cash. With the additional income we could compete easily.

I simply object to people saying things like we would be relegated in the first season. There is nothing to back that up, when you compare Celtic to the majority of the league and not just the top few clubs.

I also laugh when people describe the Scottish League as a 2 horse race - fair enough. So is the English Premier League. With more teams involved.

In any case it is Sky TV who will decide. Not the SFA or the EFA.

People who say that are probably jealous of the great results that Celtic have achieved.

I think it would be a very embarrassing situation for the English to see Celtic at the top of the premier League in the English competition...

Celtic would do great in the premiership but it would take a while until they could challenge the big 2 teams (man u and arsenal, i dont rate chelsea yet...) for the title. It would be a positive move for the game and the premiership.

but can the english fans be trusted to behave themselves? whilst celtic has some of the greatest fans in the world the english have some of the worst...

btw NUFC would give Celtic a tough match ;) :P

On of the few sides who can compete in terms of genuine support.

I have always felt your team to be under-achievers, given the vast number of people who attend St James' on a regular basis. It is something I have never been able to really understand - the lack of success that is, not the support.

I think Geordies are really Scottish anyway. You are more like us than the soft southerners.

Ajax can't even beat Twente or NAC

On this topic, J'Pol mentioned extra money could get them compete the top squads.
Well my guess is that would be more difficult if they join the premier league. Now both squads have a guaranteed european tour, even a go at the finacial very lucrative Championsleague. If they join the premier league they're not certain to qualify for that as easy as it is now. So they have to fear for income loss ;)

Lamsey said Celtic supporters are the best in the world, cause FIFA siad so, well FIFA ranks the dutch squad 5th best in the world and i can assure you that ain't right either... (btw i don't say you have damn fine supporter, cause i always like to see the atmosphere over there.. but FIFA is no measure standard. They even don't know how to select a proper football player of the year ;) )

But anyway i'm looking forward to see matches between Man U, Chelsea, Celtic, Rangers.... Van Nistelrooy against Larson that would be cool.... B)

If those 2 championships melt together will that be the end of the regional teams too? So there will be only one representing team For the UK instead of the ones there are now (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland (and which i did forget)?

That has been a fear of the British FA's for a long time, it's one of the reasons Great Britain doesn't send a team to the Olympics, they don't want to set a precedent.

It is quite likely that you will see Van Nistelroy against the Magnificent 7. However the chances of him being in the Hoops at the time are very slim.

I cannot see him staying another season. The English Premiership is a possibility, however I think he wants to go to Spain.
