Viewing Video

I used to be able to watch amost everything I downloaded but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I either get a blank screen but the time movies (when I'm using Windows Media Player 9) or an error message saying something about unkown codex (when I use my Divx Player). Do I need to download something else to view the newer movies? I appreciate any help I get.
