Microsoft has recently sought patent for and Office documents written in XML.

pantenting an open standard seems a bit silly at first but its basically so that competition cant open their file formats.

im hoping this is completley ignored by all especailly since office included the ability to open file formats like wordperfect files that they did not create.

Me too, This would seem however to make Microsft a Proprietary base for files etc... If i can't back them up and open them somehwre else... then whats the point??? :blink:

A similar situation is JPEG. JPEG is copyright, but does whoever owns it (can't remember) lock it down and make it unusable by anybody else? Same with MP3 and Fraunhofer.
