View Full Version : Please Change Your Signatures

As mentioned here http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=97014 we will not longer allow off-site signautre and avatar linking.

Your controlpanel includes a new signature upload function where you can upload your signature. We will remove all signautures from our database now.

Reason for this step is that many members use dynamic signatures which fetch a user information such as browser version, OS version, IP address and more.

Hopefully this step will help to offer our members a better privacy environment.

Please also upload your avatars or select one from our galleries while you are on it :)

I was wondering when this queer stuff was gonna happen...
Its pretty much the normal thing on most websites these days though so it had to happen...I recall privacy being one of the reasons?Bit late for that though, kazaa has been well and truly infiltrated by now...No use locking the gate now...the horse has bolted... :P :D  :P :D  :P :D

Is this one of those signature things where we have to allow popups or we dont get to see the user posted image things?just want to know cause Im not gonna bother if its that much trouble(changing my firewalls settings just to visit this site etc),Ill just go signature free :)

Huh ?

The only reason that I mentioned the popup: The upload window is a new window (opened by a javascript).

Some firewalls block javascript popups and show a javascript error instead.

That's the story ;)

yeah I noticed the popup bit in "my control panel" and thats why I asked..

Wouldnt it be easier to just ban those sort of signatures?..I know 2 other forums, one just as big if not bigger than k-lite forum that employs the banning of those ISP signatures etc

7thElement

You cannot ban it by extension. The best example would be this image http://www.danasoft.com/vipersig.jpg which is generated on-fly.

The only way to stop people to collect user information is by allowing our members to upload their sigs / avatars here.

I was about to ask the same... my sig is .png and I don't want to convert it it if possible...

Do you think it would be possible to add support for .png?

cause it's a 1 second step to delete 76,395 signatures at once, but impossible to check 76,395 profiles and delete them one by one.

You can post anything you want in PM's ;)

Off site images are allowed if they come from public domains (aol/yahoo/other known free hosts).

Posting dynamic images into topics is not longer allowed.

Quote from My Control Panel
Please use our signature uploader if you decide to use images in your signature. The uploader opens a new popup window. Make sure that you allow a popup on this site. The max. file size is limited to 100.000 bytes. Only .gif and .jpg images are allowed.

Do you mean 100 bytes or 100,000 bytes ? Because that comma looks suspiciously like a decimal point ! <_<
So it's 100Kb, yes?

Livy
02-02-2004, 11:28 PM
done. :D

is it not possibel to make the sigs the same format as avatars and personal pics.

like my avatar is uploads/av-18986.gif

or would it cause problems with multi image sigs

Interesting, I had just made a new sig and not too long after I got a PM from a Moderator saying that my sig was just noticed and was too big.

So, I just resized and optimized it. Seems to be clear of the 100k mark. :D

Everything's cool. I thought getting a notice was nice instead of just getting it wiped. :P

I'm not understanding something here. I thought this was just in regards to pics and such in the sig.

My sig is gone and all it was, was links to other sections of the forum. Was is too much text or something?

Livy

the only way 7th could delete all the sigs, was to do them all at once, everyone with a sig has lost it.
this was done so there are no longer any hotlinked images, which can pose a security threat.
u just need to put the stuff back in.

tracydani
02-03-2004, 12:45 PM
OK thanks, just wanted to be sure I was in the clear before replacing it. I just remembered I aslo had a link to anonx in it. Is that acceptable as well?

Not sure if that would give out info as well.

TD

Livy

i think its only the images that pose a threat, as is someone knows whatthey are doing, they can retrive the ip addresses of people on the forum, just by using an image in the signture. as you have to fetch the image from another server, which the board doesnt have control over, where as if they are on the server, they are onlt getting fetched from the server, so no probs.

tracydani

Thanks again Livy :)

Now I just gotta work up the energy to replace it. I'm already tired just thinking about it.

I have to mention, that it is good from you to mention this cause some ppl don't
know that their IP easily could be discovered. But if ppl who know that want to
have a dynamic Signature - like me - they should be allowed on their own risk.

So it is good to mention that ;)
