How good r u in computer hardware?
out of 10 i guess, 10 being the best.

rubric:
1. wat's a computer?
2. a computer is a box
3. i can find the power button and use windows
4. i don't faint when i open the case
5. i somewhat know where the wires go. I can change a cd rom drive or a hdd or something simple
6. ooh, bios....(basic ocing, basic plugging in wires)
7. getting my comp running pretty well. built the comp, and it's oced moderately
8. got myself some watercooling. it's all good. i'm a hip rich spoiled kid ( :D ) whos has too much money and time. i can make a computer work easily.
9. the power of peltiers and other exotic gadgets. oooooohhhh. i don't even need a case to build a computer. oohhh....
10. i am the god of computers!! i can build a computer out of a teddy bear, a shoe box, a fish tank, and some other weird stuff. ooooohhhh.....

if this doesn't look fair, point that out

i'd give myself a 7 to 7.5 :01: :01: :01: . i know more than the common man, but i'm no where near total guru/geek/nerd. rate urself here. this could get interesting. lol

I don't know, I have much to learn, but guess I can hold my own on computer hardware. I pieced this baby together and can solve problems better than the tech guys at the place I got it from.. so I guess I'd give myself a 7. I know the "Advanced Intermediates" you could say. LOL (Basic overclocking, Installing hardware, Resolving hardware conflicts)
I think of myself more of a software guy, but I'd like to learn more about hardware.

I'd say about everone here is a 0 to a 1. Does anybody know how to make any of the parts in a computer? Hence you know next to nothing about a PC.

So you would rate your knowelege of cars as 9 because you can fit a new tyre...

Me = 0.01

So a car mechanic also knows next to nothing about cars, as he would most likley not know how to make the parts.

So you are rating yourself on building PCs. Riight. Seriously, 90% of people could probably do that w/ the right tools and a guide.

Think about it. Everyone here has to ask questions about nearly everything, yet they rate themselves a 8 or 9 even.

Considering all the computing knoweledge known by everyone in the world, you know a miniscule fraction of that.
Rating yourself an 8 or 9 (like some have) is a near perfect score, and that would be suited to a person that could at least design a processor... not some mediocre guy that can build a PC.

I'm not flaming either, just looking at facts.

in madcats view i would be 0.7.

i know a lot about building them and stuff like that and quite a bit but i have no idea how to like build a processor or video card and that kinda stuff. I know how to wire things up, i can put together the computer and i can install an os and tweak\config it. so i do know a lot, probably about everything im ever going to know. unless knew types of software and hardware come out that i can learn about.

Now there's a rubric, I'll still say I'm an 8 or 9.
I do think that the knowledge curve in that is somewhat out of kelter though... too shallow wll the way up to 8, then too steep from then on.

The question was how good one was with hardware. This doesn't seem to imply that a perfect 10 rating means you can design and build a CPU, rather that you have an intimate knowledge of how different types of RAM work, the principal behind SATA and RAID systems or the advantages of hyperthreading.

abu_has_the_power
02-03-2004, 11:54 PM
i'd say 10 would be, like i said up there, the god of computer hardware. not necessarilly build a cpu from scratch. but just has very deep knowledge of computers and hardware

tesco
02-03-2004, 11:56 PM
that rubric is way wierd lol.

it goes from like someone who cant put together a computer to someone who puts them together and overclocks.

i can put mine together and can use it great also, but i dont overclock because there isnt really that much of a gain in small overclocks, and i dont have peltiers or wc becuase i dont have that kind of cash.

watercooling should b 8 and peltier 9, overclocking start at 7, building a computer should be 5, building without help of anyone is 6(me :)).

Anyone can make their own parts as well, maybe not as advanced as a Video board or whatever, but a PC board is not that hard to make. A wire here and wire there, a chip here and chip there, and a little bit of solder and you've got yourself a pc board.

And as far as the car thing, just knows how to make a car part doesn't make you a car guru, millions of factory workers around the world make car parts, but they have no idea how to repair a car. Same goes for PC parts, I have a buddy that works for Intel, and he makes the processors, but can't figure out how to install windows if his life depended on it.

You have engineers who know more about making parts and making them work in pcs, but many of them still have problems getting their computer to work. The whole computer guru thing is just thrown completely out the door. Some people know about some things and others about something else. Very few people can do it all.
Just my two cents, :D and I've decided not to rate myself, it's pointless.

Edit: just noticed I was a little harsh, not trying to flame anyone

My time spent on this forum is something I consider valuable and enjoyable. However your presence (well, what you say, actually), is what makes my stay unpleasant.

So please, don't start again!

i kinda disagree with the premise that overclocking and experience with overclocking is the measure of how good a person is with computer hardware. there's a lot more to it than that, and there are plenty of people who are whizzes with hardware who've prolly never overclocked at all.

as a hobby, yeah, overclocking and Xxtreme k00ling take a certain amount of learning & skill, but how important actually is that skill? it's just a hobby. being able to build & maintain stable workstations, servers and LANs, being able to resolve hardware conflicts without immediately resorting to a reformat, etc.... that's the kind of stuff you could actually get paid for. for example, if a person thinks he has to reformat his Windows drive just 'cause he changed his motherboard, then he ain't that good.

i said reformat, not reinstall. two completely different things. sometimes you can switch motherboards without reinstalling (i.e. you stuck with the same mobo/chipset brand), sometimes you've gotta reinstall in order to get working drivers onto the HD (i.e. you switched brands)... but there are a lot of self-styled hardware "gurus" out there who will absolutely insist that you need to reformat and completely abandon the partition just 'cause you swapped a new mobo or video card in, and that's just ridiculous.

i'll just trust that you prolly misread that sentence. ;)

i kinda disagree with the premise that overclocking and experience with overclocking is the measure of how good a person is with computer hardware. there's a lot more to it than that, and there are plenty of people who are whizzes with hardware who've prolly never overclocked at all.

as a hobby, yeah, overclocking and Xxtreme k00ling take a certain amount of learning & skill, but how important actually is that skill? it's just a hobby. being able to build & maintain stable workstations, servers and LANs, being able to resolve hardware conflicts without immediately resorting to a reformat, etc.... that's the kind of stuff you could actually get paid for. for example, if a person thinks he has to reformat his Windows drive just 'cause he changed his motherboard, then he ain't that good.

Yes DW, I did.
I even tried to do everything right, too.
I had tested the water circuit out side of the box and all seemed fine, apparently the hose only leaked ( and it was a very tiny, slow, pinhole leak at that) when bent at it's final, installed shape.
As usual, upon first firing it up, I watched for any problems, but not long enough.
3 or so hours later the Radeon died a hideous and painful death.

The only replacement that I had handy is an ancient PCI card from a old Compaq or something. Max resolution is 480x600 and it only supports 16-bit color.

Needless to say, it BITES.

i think the terminology is getting in the way, here. depending on who you ask, they'll use different terms:
1) reinstall, partial reinstall, or repair = putting a new Windows folder in
2) reinstall, full reinstall, or reformat = completely wiping the partition

yes, you will prolly have to fix your Windows installation.

no, you don't have to delete the partition. a lotta people will swear up & down that it's necessary-- ask about it on a site like Futuremark and you'll get all kinds of crazy advice like that. but these are usually people who just reformat at the first sign of trouble, basically people espousing the "Rambo approach" to computer maintenance.

Yah I have learned a lot more. I never said a LOAD of jobs, just at 2 local places. The reason why most companies dont hire any younger then 16 is insurance. If you parents sign stuff you can work at 15 without breaking the law. Yeah it was a 30 Page thread...most of the time it wasnt even me talking though. A lot of it was just everyone else talking about other stuff. Let it go it was a while ago.

And why would a computer shop not hire a 15 year old? If I know the same stuff as someone whose 18 then it doesnt really matter at all how old I am

Mainly because a lot of people, out of pride, on purpose will avoid being served by a person thats much younger (we could be talking 10-30 years + here) that knows 10x more than them, just so as not to look stupid.

I agree, just because you install a new mobo, doesn't mean you have to reinstall the OS, I've done it serveral times, just moving one hard drive to the other.
It maybe optimal to go all out and even reformat, but it's not required, so It's not a fact.
Of course you will have a bunch of extra unneeded drivers installed, so it would be cleaner, but it doesn't mean it's not going to work.

Sorry Brainiac, but you are dead wrong. If you change your motherboard (go from a say, Dell->an Abit) you need to reinstall Windows, it's just a fact of life.
i said reformat, not reinstall. two completely different things. sometimes you can switch motherboards without reinstalling (i.e. you stuck with the same mobo/chipset brand), sometimes you've gotta reinstall in order to get working drivers onto the HD (i.e. you switched brands)... but there are a lot of self-styled hardware "gurus" out there who will absolutely insist that you need to reformat and completely abandon the partition just 'cause you swapped a new mobo or video card in, and that's just ridiculous.

i'll just trust that you prolly misread that sentence. ;)
I am sorry, but there is no way you can take a hard drive, from, say, for the sake of arguement, off of my DELL, and plug it into big dawg's ASUS and expect to boot up Windows effectively.

Ok now here's just a comment from what I want to comment on.

@Bigdawg.

(first, try not to take this the wrong way, since you seem to do this all the time) Most computer sellers do what they're supposed to do: sell computers. It's different if you're talking about being a computer technician. The average technician doesn't know much (or knows vaguely) about how computers actually work. They just do what you did with your computer: build it up, set it up, and tweak it "a little" (no offense to oc'ers :) ).

The thing is, a good technician shouldn't just know that - if you ask an "average" technician to tell you how many volts does the AGP or PCI slots have, I doubt you'll get a good answer. In most cases, they don't even know what cable is the 12V cable which comes from the PSU.

My point is (and I'm gonna bring Descartes over here), all anyone can know is that they know NOTHING. The insignificant piece of knowledge you (think you) have is probably worthless to 98% of the world. It is useful (however), to what you do. Being this a forum of (mostly) technology-related talk (sorry Lounge, not you :P), a "Rate yourself" post might be appropriate. However, I don't think it would make a damn bit of a difference if you either rate yourself as 8,9,10,25, a million.

All you have to realize is what you have is something for yourself and yourself only (Oh morpheus inspired me there  ). It might be helpful for someone else if you are willing to share it. It isn't helpful whenever you try to keep bickering at something that isn't worth so (and I'm talking about fighting).

Damn, that came out long. Well, I hope you got my point, and REALLY hope you didn't get that the wrong way.

@clocker

Man that fecking sucks. Now that you've experienced this, I HAVE to ask something:
Do you think the WC was worth it?

@Smurfette, adamp2p, and braniac

Oh god you have said this to me a million times - SHUT UP. Stop fighting for something that isn't worth it.

Bleh it's a big posts  Oh well.

Peace out :) :01:

Oh yeah, no doubt.

What happened was my fault and had nothing to do with watercooling as a solution at all.
Properly done, my experience notwithstanding, it's not that difficult, watercooling offers the best of both worlds- low noise and excellent heat removal.

The best heatsink in the world (insert your candidate here) can only be as good as the airflow in your case will allow. Poor airflow=high ambient case temps=high chip temps.
Watercooling basically removes the case airflow from the equation, so life gets that much simpler.

There is also the bling factor which is hard to quantify, but undeniably present.

What happened to me was the result of my own carelessness and stupidity...don't let it dissuade you from trying what I consider to be a superior method of cooling.

Actually Guatemala has one of the best weathers of the world -

It doesn't rain too much, the sun isn't THAT hot, there are only 2 seasons - warm and wet. Warm - sunny, no rain, but fresh. Wet - rainy, fresh, a little colder.

No snow.

Our weather here in Nova Scotia sucks !&#$@%%. It was 6 degrees celcius yesterday with absolutely no wind.Today on the other hand,it was -7 degrees and we had the wind blowing at about 35 km/hr (windchill around -20 or so).A couple of weeks ago we had windchills in roughly at -55 degrees and we got some snow also. This time last year we had a couple of feet of snow on the ground but this year just a couple of inches.

Oh I want the sun to come back,it's too damn cold.BRRRRRRR

That remains a fact of life. ;)

Now it is no Michael Jordan manuever to move data from one hard drive to another; I do this all the time, whenever I perform a back-up. I hope that is what you are referring to. Or, you could mean a GHOST partition.

Edit: and Brainiac, it is good to see you around. :)
Adam, if you're not going to read and try to comprehend what Brainiac has posted (twice), please STFU.
Dude, you don't get it, do you?

Brainiac has been a friend of mine for almost a year...I listen to what he says with respect. Take a deep breath dude

Be a nerd while you are young kid...I learned the hard way

...trust me, if you work hard enough now you won't end up like me...

Get good grades in math and science, they are the most competitive fields--and earn the highest $---even though it may take hours and hours to master math and science, if you get good at it now it won't be so hard for you later...to make serious cash

I'm currently pushing a 4.0 the last two semesters, only problem, my second semester in college I decided the alcohol and MJ were my best friends, and came out with a 1.3, so my career average has been suckin' wind. I've finally got it to 3.03; hopefully I can get it up to at least a 3.5, and keep it there.
That one bad semester's really does stay with you, and haunt you the rest of your college span.

Not as bad as my buddy though, he enjoyed the parties with me that semester, and went on enjoying them for the next two semesters, and was booted out. Glad I at least had the good since to turn it around, so I didn't end up that way.

Well if your strength is in physics, that is a good thing. What kind of physics is it if it is not calculus based? AFAIK, physics is a nightmare. Part of Calculus is physics applications like "a ball is fall in at speed x at time z it hits particle y find the time they collide"...arrggh

Nice grades adam :smilie4:
When I got out of high school, my average would be a 3/B/83. However, university has been a bitch. I won every class in the first semester with good grades (again, a good 3/b/8x average). However, the second semester was a bad one. Only passed one class, and with the minimum. Now I'm battling to get my average up and running again :)
But now it's gonna be harder with a job  hehe jk well at least I'm learning more responsibility than what I had.

Well if your strength is in physics, that is a good thing. What kind of physics is it if it is not calculus based? AFAIK, physics is a nightmare. Part of Calculus is physics applications like "a ball is fall in at speed x at time z it hits particle y find the time they collide"...

Olololol. Lemme see. The courses I take every year are mostly 2 important ones: Math and Physics (the other is computer programming, but this is more because of system engineering rather than just engineering). I guess they help you be patient and think about stuff before you do it. It's pretty hard, but it just takes time to learn :)

Olololol. The story of my 2nd semester ;) Although it didn't involve alcohol and/or MJ :P It involved going to play pool and counter-strike  Stupid me :frusty:

The bachelor degree is a 4 year course and the master degree is a 5 year course. Not sure about job prospects at the moment.

I was in Pounta Gorda at the time...the pretties stuff would have to be Blue Creek (are you familiar with that?) and the Jungle areas oh and cant forget the coral reefs. I know more about computers then anyone in my 5A school..i know alot about them almost more then my computer tech teacher...i help people with alot of stuff...why would u be 30,000 if im 8? which i changed to 7 on his rubric huh? is it because i like asus and not epox <_< I know alot about computers...ive been offered jobs at computer places, so i dont know why your 30,000 if im 8.
Woah, didnt think you would actually reply to my post like that.

Anyway, why I would be 30k if you were 8? Or I guess, 26.250k to your 7? Do the math.

Look, I could care less how much you know compared to the people in your school. I could care less if you know more than your computer teacher. What you know, and what is supposdly a 7, or an 8 or whatever on this scale, seems to be very low for a 7, or an 8.

hmmm
sorry for my ban English...
I mean that i can format my PC alone and i can fix more of the issues that a user may have in windows...

I also can find out what part (hardware) of my PC has a problem without go to a technician...
So i can buy a new one and fix it alone.

Nothing special, but 10 years ago i was paying a PC technician for every little problem, so it's an improvement for me !!!

I dreaded taking my computer to a tech! That encouraged me to learn the same way you have, tt. It's amazing how reluctant some people are to trying new things. Just contacted my dad/step-mom recently. I sent them a link to a gallery of my kids that somehow didn't make a link on their end. I showed them how to copy & paste- they were impressed with the trick. :01: They are not the worst I have come across in the family, though... My wife's sister has had to call us several times to do the same exact thing. :frusty: I've lost a lot of respect for her. :ermm:

@megabyteme even i do face situations like especially , when i was managing a internet cafe lot of noobs visits the center n many of em dont even know how to do basic stuff properly n blame the systems even if try to teach them the proper way they wont learn.

I didn't have that experience, but I did start an in-home pc repair business. I quit a few months after I started because the customers were just too painfully dumb- and I spent too much time trying to be nice and help them actually enjoy using their computers. My mistake there... :(

I have successfully fixed all pc problems I have come across, but I'm still about 0/50 for fixing the operators...

It's a seven. I tried watercooling but it didn't work out as expected.
After emptying the bucket filled with water over the computer it started to make some
weird noises and finally shutdown. So I think I can't really give myself an eight.
That would be too much honour, if it's an eight it's for the effort not the final result.
