well here is the basics of it i guess:

you go into your bios and check out your temps first, make sure they are pretty good, below 45 is good, below 37 would be really good for overclocking.

then while in the bios find a setting to change teh multiplier or fsb (front side bus)
the front side bus willl most likely be the one you want to change. put it up little bits at a time then boot to see if the computer will start and run folding@home for a little while to make sure its stable then you can go a little more. if the computerbecomes unbootable put it back down or clear the cmos to reset it to default.

fsb changes make your ram run faster and are usually around 200-333 for a new processor and around 33-100 for older ones.

multiplier might be locked on your chip but if it is changeable it will change your cpu's speed. the speed of the cpu is found by multiplying the multiplier times the fsb.

ex. the xp2000 has an fsb of 133 (266 effective) and multiplier of 12.5. 133*12.5= 1670mhz.

so basically if you ahve good temps and the option in your bios then put up the fsb a little then boot and test and repeat till it stops working to get your max speed.

what does it say when you try to change it? does it change then you restart and it goes back or does it just not go any higher?

OT/ How do the people who look after your pc (i.e: warrenty cover) know if you have or haven't overclocked it?

well as long as you clear your cmos and go back to default they have no proof at all that you overclocked, but usually if your cpu fails it will be beucase of inadequate cooling, and overclocking means more cooling so if it fails its usually because of overclocking so they will know, but have no proof.

you can always try and overclock it with software overclocking proggie's
CPUFSB (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=420) :)
although im not a big fan of software overclocking..but it will get the job done

just make sure you know how to reset your bios incase you want to much. :)

how do you restore all your defaults after you overclock?

The Load BIOS Defaults option... or you can use the clear CMOS jumper.

BTW, how can anyone give help on this without asking what mobo & CPU are being used? Sheesh.

with this program you can try upping your fsb...but make sure you know how to clear cmos...for when you go to far :)

you can clear cmos by jumper mostlikely on the below on the right side there's a cmos jumper just move it to the other pin configuration for about 5 sec and put it back on default postion.

when you insatll the prog
you select your make and mobotype

from here you see your actual clockspeed

and then try to u that clockspeed slowly
and keep an eye on how you pci slot ar gonna run
cause if they are to far out of spec it will not be an sucsesful overclock
just be patience and take it step by step
