Windows messenger is still a program.

You have to say "Messenger service" for everyone to have that clear ;)

Pop Not is an amazing program to stop pop ups, give it a try. Kinda hard to find on the net though.

I like adsgone for a popup killer works well and gets most everything, and for those that sneak by, you can add them to your pop list.

You don't need a pop-up blocker. You want to MINIMIZE the number of programs running in the backround. <_<

What you need is to first get rid of any spyware on your computer.
Ad-Aware free edition (http://www.lavasoftnews.com/)
Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/)

Choose one and run it and get rid of your spyware.

THEN, edit your HOSTS file.
Check this site (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) It has all the info you need and a good hosts file.
Another great site (http://accs-net.com/hosts/) This explains it to, but has a really great hosts file.

BTW, AOL sux. There's no dispute, it simply does.
Use an actual browser.
MyIE2 (http://www.myie2.com/) best ever.
Mozilla or Firebird (http://www.mozilla.org/) No matter which one you choose, they are great browsers.

They all have tabbed interfaces and they all have built-in pop-up blockers... if you really want it. <_<

sounds like you have spyware/adware on your comp too. Ad-Aware free edition
Spybot Search and Destroy should help you there.

Be careful about using HOSTS . They can slow down your comp and making unable to connect to the net.

Another thing. To get rid of that annoying Windows Messenger.
ShootTheMessenger (http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm)
Easy as hell, no install, no unzip, it simply... is.....

Or you can uninstall it with this
XP-AntiSpy (http://www.xpantispy.org/)

cuz it's real easy, but the program is pure programming language, no garbage, no install.

Maybe Steve Gibson did it to test his programming skills. :D
But, he has some othe great tools, like DCOMbobulator, and Spinrite....

But as far as I know, it doesn't shut down the service, it changes a registry entry to shut it off. Which, SP2 is gonna do. At least I believe so....

HI,

When you're in your browser, go to

Options/Internet Options/"Advanced" Tab (on the far right)

, then scroll down to the very end and check the option "Empty the temporary internet files when the browser is closed"...

You can also clear them manually. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\ temporary internet files. And you delete them...

You should also run Ad-Aware and Spybot (lXero Grid gave links above in this thread) to get rid of the sh*t that's hoging your pc.

And while your at it, let your antivirus screen your system too, and stop surfing the porn sites :P

Edit : forget your 3 (three ?!!!) pop up blockers and get a good browser that can do that job (and many other things ) :
Opera, Mozilla or MyIE2 (personnal best). All links above....

Salute

hmm interesting <_< your mom may have been in warez.com, otherwise you don't get as much popups. Anyways, you might have adware that bring these sh!ts, especially the real KaZaA with all it's crap. As everyone said, remove them with adware or spybot, both are g00d.

you can connect to AOHell and then just minimize it and then use any browser you want. It works. Not that I would be caught dead using AOHell
