 Change XP Boot Screen

If you would like to change your boot up screen follow the directions below.
These instructions assume that you have a place to download the boot screen from the net.
If you would like to download a boot screen, visit http://www.themexp.org

1. Backup (copy) the file %windir%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe (most likely C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe - the boot screen)
2. Download the .zip to your computer
3. Extract ntoskrnl.exe to a directory other than %windir%\system32 (most likely C:\windows\system32)
4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode (hit F8 before the boot screen) or into true DOS (from a boot disk)
5. Overwrite the file %windir%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe (which should have been backed up) with the extracted exe
6. Reboot your computer as you normally would

Rather than have to boot into safe mode you can use BootXP to change it. It also lets you make your own images into a boot screen but remember it will convert it to 16 colors and 640*480 pixels.

Go here (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?act=ST&f=17&t=20067) for it and a keygen.

My problem is the opposite! XP Pro had cool boot choices with icons, but when I tweked my network settings - I have a boring drop down for users, I tried bootXP and a few others but this must be a setting that I changed and cannot remember.

Does anyone have a clue of what I am talking about?

Try searching for bootxp in search tab and if finds sources for your sig it will start quicker.I have recently downloaded it from kazaa and found quite a few sources using the method i just told you.Good luck ;)

Style Xp is bad ass... as it allows for non verfied themes, and total customization of xp for the most part.

I currently run a long horn theme from themexp which is just hella purdy.

If you want full customisation you should get DesktopX and WindoBlinds. You can completely change the look of windows, make it unrecognisable if you so wish. I have mine setup like a mac, and apart from some icons, it is pretty convincing.

hmmm ok my ntoskrnl.exe (boot up kernel) has become currupted and i have replace it with ones that i have got from the net and that works fine but i was just wondering if anyone here knows how i can get the original restored

oh btw it did not become currupted cos of this stuff it has been that way for a while and seriously slows boot up speeds,
maybe the original ntoskrnl.exe is on my xp cd hmmmmm any ideas where i can get a hold of ntoskrnl.exe ;)

 I've seen DesktopX and Windowblinds and they both look really amazing... but... i've tried using both of them and couldn't figure out a single thing on either of them. My personal choice (seeing as how i'm an idiot :P ) is to go with StyleXP. It's pretty much idiot proof. :D  :D

yes you can change the 98 boot screen.. it's actually easier then in XP (unless you have bootxp) all you have to do is unzip the boot screen that you want and take that ntoskrnl.exe and use it to replace your old one. I think it's in your C:/windows folder but can't remember.. just do a search for it.

Razz... if i were you i'd try asking a friend for a copy of theirs. That should work... if you have a friend with the OS boot screen your looking for.

You can change this in Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts > Pick A Task: Change The Way Users Log On And Off
You'll want to check "Use the Welcome Screen"

yeah, all you have to do is create an image, not sure bout colour depth etc. its called logo.sys
there are also another to, logos.sys and the other i cant remember, they are the boot, the shutting down screen, and the "it is now safe to turn your computer off" screen
