What currency are we talking here? Pounds? Dollars? Canadian?

I hear you can get Bartons for 100 dollars US easily, and its one hell of a lot faster than a Duron, as Bigdawg mentioned..

80 for the Barton (OC'd at what... 2.3?) and 30 for Syntax - SiS ATX Mobo with Audio, USB 2.0, AGP 8X and 10/100Mbps Ethernet, 5 PCI, 1 GP, 3 DDR DIMM

EDIT: that will bring total to 460 USD

If you dont want to spend too much, then 512Mb is PLENTY. Where did you get a case for a laptop? Can you give us a link?

I didnt save it  But it was on ebay, believe it was refurbished or somethin. Do you have any links for 1 gig sticks? :D Im just curios since this thing can handle 3 gigs.

Is the motherboard dual channel?

If so, get two 512Mb sticks ;)

I just got this Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-379&depa=0)and currently have it overclocked to 2.23 ghz. just get yourself a stick of 512 mb pc3500 ddr and you'll be all set. unless you have dual channel then get a dual pack 2x256mb.

instead of the motherboard with the SIS chipset i would try to get a board with the Nforce 2 chipset. its much better, imo, more features and better performance. the asus A7N8X is a good example.

Yea, in my first post i had an nVidia chipset, thats why i got the 5200, but it was in a combo deal so i changed it for the other board for a lower price.

Yes.

My understanding is however , makers claims notwithstanding, many boards have trouble with the 1 gig sticks...better to use 2x 512Mb instead.
