1. Sata currently offers 150MB/s, not 1.5GB/s.

2. Media transfer rate = 757Mb/s - that's Megabits per second = 95MB/s. So media rate is slower than interface rate. Average.

3. 3.1 Bels idle acoustics. I assume that means 31dB. That's noisy for idle. How loud it is active? Pass the ear protectors.

Ok, it's a big drive, but it's performance isn't all that stunning.

exactly, huge hd's take longer to read and write, so you have to partition them to a smaller size

much better getting smaller drives, with faster spin rates eg wd raptors at 10,000 rpm

there is no need for mass storage on hard drives today when dvd data burns will take 4.7 gig

go for speed and big buffers, rather than size

What about those of us who prefer not to use DVD-R(W) technology? It gets a little irritating having to go through a whole load of DVDs just to find that episode of the Simpsons you've been looking for.

not too bad...

i hate how people at my school will be like my cpu is a 2800xp and stuff and they think there computers are so much betetr than mine but really they arent, imo, ill tell you why:

1) they dont organize files, dont defrag, dont have virus scanners, no firewall, loads of spyware, 1098908 programs running and the desktop will have like 12093 icons on it. this makes it incredibly slow and very insecure.

2) they usually have shit onboard video which is slow as hell and takes away from your RAM which makes the computer really slow when you play games and stuff.

3) theyre OEM so its got the recovery discs and crappy free software and they arent upgradeable too much. for example if u want a enw processor and motherboard youll need a new case usually and then a enw power supply and video card and you end up paying as much as getting a new computer anyway and youve got the old one sitting around doing nothing.

i really dont like computer half-illiterates.

Your name suits you well. <_<

Question :-

What does OEM mean?

Answer :-

Original Equipment Manufacturer

OEM hardware almost never comes with manuals, disks, or other support information.
Since the OEM-packaged hardware is aimed at computer professionals, the manufacturer assumes that the system builder will download the latest drivers off the Web, and that the system builder will not need instructions.

OEM hardware usually comes packaged in an unpadded box or plastic bag. When it is shipped in bulk to the computer company or system builder, the manufacturer just sends it in a minimally padded bulk pack. When unpacked, each unit will usually be wrapped in plastic bags or shrinkwrap.

OEM hardware sometimes carries a different brand stamp.
As an example, Creative Labs sells Soundblaster-compatible cards to system builders under the "Vibra" brand name. These cards are very similar to their retail counterparts, except that they carry the "Vibra" name instead of the famous "Soundblaster" name.

OEM hardware is cheaper than retail.
That's the whole idea behind OEM packaging. By minimizing packaging and cutting various corners, manufacturers can pass the savings on to system builders and other computer companies. If a local computer store is offering equipment at a substantially lower cost than the local competition, they might be reselling OEM equipment.

If an expensive piece of Hardware fails and your dealer leaves you high and dry you may be completely unable to get any service or support !!!
Remember that with OEM hardware you are usually completely dependent on the dealer for help and warranty service !!!
If your dealer inspires such confidence OEM components may be a sensible choice for you !!!

How about this? (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=59) I'm sure the other manufacturers will be bringing out similar sized drives before too long.

I didn't say it was poor, or anything like that. But it isn't exactly stunning either, although admittedly you have to pay a lot for very high performance drives.

What I meant by the manufacturers comment is that they may "distort" the truth a "little" bit :P

Theres no point in anything about 100 MB/s for an IDE hard drive really, or is this on SATA? Oh well I can't remember.

http://www.vnunet.com/News/1154004

Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates has outlined Microsoft?s security strategy for the coming year in a letter to customers.

Security changes will be included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Long term, systems such as caller ID-style technologies for email and behavioural monitoring of software will be introduced.

"Given human nature, evolving threat models and the increasing interconnectedness of computers, the number of security exploits will never reach zero. But we can dramatically blunt the impact of cybercriminals, and are dedicating a major portion of our research and development investments to security advances," Gates wrote in the letter.

SP2 will be released by June. It will strengthen the Windows firewall and turn it on by default, block unsolicited downloads from web sites. It will also include software to work with the new generation of processors, such as the AMD FX 53, which have some anti-virus capability built in. The full letter can be seen on http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/execmail/

I could be wrong, but that sounds like they're trying to police the interweb.

But we can dramatically blunt the impact of cybercriminals, and are dedicating a major portion of our research and development investments to security advances," Gates wrote in the letter.

well ive been using it almost without any problems except that whenever any spyware comes onto the computer it would run extremely slow, and 2 days ago i was deleting the spyware with spysweeper when the program suddenly froze and i had to restart but after the restart it wouldnt start up anymore, not even in safe mode so i decided i would just format and not install anymore beta service packs...but other than that i have had no problems at all, and i've been using SP2 since newyears eve...

it would be wise to not install it ever again if you read between the lines thats just going to cause problems in the future with all the programs we like to "try" before we buy ;)

 The only programs I have ever bought were a couple of games, i think the only ones were the sims, rollercoaster tycoon+all addons and diablo 1 and 2 plus all addons.

Everything else i have has been downloaded or copied from someone else... but anyway, yeah im not going to install it until it is finally released, because i like teh firewall. its got incoming and outgoing and you can choose to block certain programs, there are also ways to stop microsoft products rfom connecting to teh internet, although natively it let's them connect.

I am mildly surprised by the fact that despite a HDD of this capacity, it spins at 7200rpm.

Sounds like it will be cool...I remember when I would dream about upgrading my 566Mhz Celeron, 320MB PC100 ram, onboard graphics, 10GB HDD up to a 566Mhz Celeron, 320MB PC100 ram, onboard graphics *20*GB HDD.

I thought that would make it sooo awesome...now were talking about 400GB HDDs haha
