I'm trying to burn a 1.0 gigabyte file onto a dvd-r but it expands to 8 gigs! How can it go 8X bigger?!?

Filename: smallville.101-104.dvdq.704x384.divx5.avi

it does this because it is a compressed source

to burn to dvcd (i assume) you need an mpeg-1 file
yours is an avi file, which is an "mpeg-1 squashed"

when you try to burn, your burning software expands it to an mpeg-1 file, which in this case is 8GB.

the best option is to use tmpeg-enc to change it to an mpeg-1 and then to burn it how you are trying to now

That sucks because I did that and it'll only go to 3 gigs minimum. I don't want to waste precious DVD-Rs

you should convert the avi with a 'convert' tool to an .mpeg and then burn it as 'data'

Will it work on DVD players?

under "advanced settings" right click on "bitrate" and click unlock. then in the penultimate screen, change bitrate to whatever you like, watching the size change as you do it

Won't let me go under 3 gigs.

in that case select a different template - say an SVCD one. should work with no probs
