What do you want to do? Just back up movies that are on your hard drive or do you want to play them in a DVD player?

To play them on a DVD player you need to convert them to a format you DVD player can play. Most DVD players will play VCDs, some will play SVCDs and KVCDs which are a slightly better quality.

For VCD, the movie will need to be split onto two discs. The basic process is to get a .avi movie file, load it into a program called TMPGenc and convert it into two .mpg files. You then burn these .mpg files to a VCD using Nero in VCD mode.

There are alternative programs to do this but the process is basically the same, and I find this way to be the easiest and to give the best results.

There is a nice guide here. (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm)
