Perhaps he is going to set it real high after he's downloaded the film and let it seed until he gets a 1.00 share ratio?

edit: Though it is a bit suspect that he has blurred out his share ratio and upload speed.

There's NO point in hiding his share ratio because it can be calculated using the non-hidden information. It is 0.113.

He's also lying about having his upload set to 20-25 KB/sec in the picture. It's uploading at 14 KB/sec to (supposedly) 4 users max because that's what he has it set to. There's really no reason to HIDE any of that information -- just hiding the filename is a good idea.

Sadly, he's downloaded more than the size of the file reported at the top of the picture! This suggests bad connections somewhere -- possibly HOSTILE SOURCES!

Because the file is nearly done and appears to have enough sources to easily finish downloading, increasing the upload rate to 20 KB/sec and max users from 4 to 5-7 won't hurt the speed much -- it'll still finish downloading and you can get a share rating of 1 or more a little quicker. No point wasting upload bandwidth if it's not significantly hurting your download speed. B)

When it finally finishes, you could possibly increase the upload rate from 20 KB/sec to 25 KB/sec... or possibly even as high as 28 KB/sec. This is assuming your upload max is 256 kilobits/sec.

I can get a few hundred down and only can only all 13 up. If I leave it on cable fast I'll wind up getting capped from my provider at 128k instead of 1mbit.[/quote]You simply cannot exceed the speed of your connection -- especially on uploads -- without BAD things happening. Even if your ISP doesn't further cripple your connection, pushing upload speeds to absolute max only results in hideous download speeds and ironically REDUCED upload speeds compaired to 'nearly max speed' uploading.

I am not asking you to upload at 'unlimited' speed -- I highly recommend AGAINST using that setting.

I in fact think it is BETTER to be using super seed mode and 'average' upload rate over a LONG period of time rather than using normal seed mode and a faster upload rate for a shorter period of time EVEN THOUGH in the second case you upload MORE. This is because with super seed mode you are giving the NEEDED parts to the swarm of downloaders to share among themselves. With regular seed mode, you may be uploading the same parts multiple times to different users while they NEVER get the missing parts they all need before you reach 1:1 ratio for uploading to downloading.

Note that with LOTS of downloaders/peers and many distributed copies between thm, super seed mode DOESN'T work well. It's when the number of downloaders is few and/or a FULL copy of the file cannot be created by them sharing the parts they have that super seed mode is really needed. If there's lots and lots of downloaders, you'll end up sharing 1/10th of a chunk to lots of users and they won't be able to upload ANY of it till they get a complete chunk.

File chunks are typically 256 KiloBYTES in size, although they are often larger for movies. Even at 10 KB/sec upload rate to 4 users, splitting that equally means they each get 2.5 KB/sec. So it takes about 1min 45sec to send out a chunk to each person -- however BitTorrent likes to 'jump users' on uploads a LOT if there's lots of users, so it may take considerably longer before you send the 1st chunk to ANYONE. Until someone gets at least 1 COMPLETE file chunk that somebody else needs, they will not upload anything.

Even a 1:1 upload:download ratio is only a general rule. Some torrents have SO MANY seeds that you can't upload fast on them because all the peers/downloaders are maxed out in speed! Others need far more uploading JUST to keep those torrents alive! I try to keep my upload bandwidth at least 75% used even 24/7 -- since I cannot save it up and it's separate from my download bandwidth.

For those with bandwidth daily/monthly caps, I recommend uploading at a (much?) reduced rate but over a longer period. You don't have to upload 1:1 with your downloads, but you BETTER NOT exit the torrent (unless you're just rebooting and/or will return later) if there's no other seeds! At least make sure all the peers/downloaders have at least 1 (preferably more) distributed file copy between themselves.

Something new I've started doing is starting FINISHED torrents immediately after rebooting, because these can start uploading immediately while I search for and/or start new torrents. After new torrents start uploading, I either slow or exit these finished torrents so the new torrents can upload and hopefully download at full speed. Once again this is because I cannot save my upload bandwidth up for later use... so I might as well give away all I can. :)

On ADSL it would be virtually impossible to have a speed of higher than 64KB/s (because 512 divided by 8 is 64). And that's assuming everything is functioning at its best. ;)
Maybe the person now has only a 56K connection.

Oh and to do a screen-grab, you press Print Screen, go to Paint and press Edit > Paste, save it as a JPEG file, then upload the picture it somewhere.

Oh and a side note to Switeck:
I suggest you post that information in the BT Tips section.
Your single post answered ALL the questions I had back when I was a newbie at BT (ah the times  ), so your post would be a valuable asset to the Tips section.
Although I understand your post works best on the Shad0ws BT Client (based on the settings names), with a few settings name changes by repliers to said tips thread it can be easily as informative for Azureus users.

Your post could very well become the thing users can refer to when met with leechers who whine about their capped connection and use this as an excuse to leech.

Keep up the good work mate :01:

Ironically, it's due to people using the default upload speed of 'unlimited' -- this stuffs up their connection and makes BitTorrent think they're already downloading at max speed. So if you DO limit your upload bandwidth BELOW your connection's max upload speed then YOU are far more likely to get a fast download speed than the other users -- this of course ASSUMES you are not firewalled though.

In the picture, it's quite possible that with only 4 downloaders (3 peers+you) and 50 seeds that the 50 seeds are able to saturate everyone's download bandwidth.

The longer people leave BitTorrent open after finishing a download, the more likely that is to happen.

I don't even bother trying to get a 1:1 download to upload ratio on those torrents -- instead I spend my upload bandwidth on OTHER torrents that are desperate for seeds!

Monkeee
06-28-2004, 08:18 AM
lol yeah its so hard to get a 1:1 ratio on torrent bits.... funny to say but to many seeders... not enough leechers.. lol.... :D
