The last members of the original Winamp team have said goodbye to AOL and the door has all but shut on the Nullsoft era,
Only a few employees remain to prop up the once-ubiquitous digital audio player with minor updates, but no further improvements to Winamp are expected.
Winamp's abandonment comes as no surprise to those close to the company who say the software has been on life support since the resignation of Nullsoft founder and Winamp creator Justin Frankel last January....

What so winamp is over?

I was wondering about that - if something becomes extremly popular it normally goes Commercial....

Firefox anyone?

Damn winamp rocks. As long as no new file types come out, winamp will rock forever. Haha, this will not happen. At least it will not use alot of system rescources.

Winamp deserved to die.

I used it for 2 years, then they got sidetracked on that stupid Watabe scripting, skinning language and forgot about improving the interface and sound etc.
Then they took too long producing new versions.
They also did nothing to impove the playlist area.
So I went to Foobar and it has a much cleaner sound, has lots of 3rd plugins, has mulitple playlists and can be customised too hell. But No skins !

PaintshopPro has just been bought by Corel. So perhaps the same will happen here. I hope the developers of Winamp got a good price for it, as they obviosly put a lot of time in to it.

While a tad disappointing, given the fact that I currently use 5.05 and I have always used Winamp, I still feel optomistic that Winamp's days are not entilely numbered yet. You just have to take a visit to winamp.com to see an active, large community and regularly updated news.
I choose to think that yes, Winamp's development may be slowing down and becoming much more sparse due to staff leaving but IMO this doesn't necesserily mean the end for Winamp.

At least I hope not

Long live WINAMP :music:
