I'm after a new 160GB HD just for games and videos.
I was wondering how much diffrence is there between 5400RPM and 7200RPM & would it make any noticable diffrence during gaming?

for things like videos, mp3 and other storage, a 5400 is enough........ however for games you might notice a bit of lag with a 5400 (i know of some hardcore gamers that dont wanna take any risk and got a 10000 raptor to be sure ;) )

btw, may i ask why you're askin this? cause its hard nowadays to find desktop 5400 disks........

Hi storm thx for the reply. Just that there is a few Maxtor 160GB 5400RPM for £50, Which is considerably cheaper than the 7200RPM one.

Mine is a 120Gb 7200 rpm

Copying and pasting things may take a ms or so longer, but if it's just a storage drive or whatnot and your not the kinda guy that would get upset if a whole millisecond of your life was wasted, then you'd be fine with 5400rpm

he might also want to use it for games......... in which case it would make a (small) difference........ i dont know if you would really notice it that much though.......

but if its really alot cheaper id go for it (but thats just a movie/mp3/video collector talkin :P )

I'd spend the extra money to get a seagate drive...much quieter you'll be happy with your purchase.

if you get a fast drive (7200rpm, 8mb cache) then you could install windows to it and have faster boot times.
