ive just installed a maxton 120g h drive as a slave. xp reconized it but when i go into my computer its not there.
so i took out my master and made the maxtor 120g my master. then i put in xp and tryed to install it on my 120g hdrive. the pc starts the installion process (yon no b4 window asks you do u want to insall afresh copy of xp) the i get the blue screen sayin there is a problem with my new harware and windows will now shut down to protect my pc.

help please

Have you by any chance now got both drives set as master? that will certainly confuse things. Put your new drive back as the slave, then restart XP as before. The drive will not be recognised in "My Computer" until you have partitioned it.

Go into Control Panel, and select "Administrative Tools", then "Computer Management". Under "Storage" you should see "Disk Management". Select that and on the bottom right you should see your drives, both the old one and the new one. The new one will say something like "Unpartitioned space". Right click on that area and create a new partition.

Once you've done that you can format it and you should then be able to see it in "My Computer".

did you check the jumper settings before you installed it?
most ship in "cable select" mode...
set em to master w/slave present (for the master)
and slave (for the slave)

well....you could at least post the solution...

I sometimes use a magnetic screwdriver also, is that bad? I would think it would be but im to lazy to find another one.
