View Full Version : Microsoft uses illegal, pirated software

A startling news item came up on a spanish computing site I visit oftenly. It informs the reader that the .wav files used for the Microsoft Windows Media Player Tours have been engineered (created/edited) using a illegal copy of Sony's Sound Forge audio app.

Apparently, the "handle" Deepz0ne (a known cracker) appears as a signature at the end of the .wav files. I've checked and CONFIRMED that this is true (screenshot I took a couple of hours ago):

To test this yourself, go to C:\WINDOWS\Help\Tours\WindowsMediaPlayer\Audio\Wav, and open any .wav file (like wmpaud5.wav) in a hex editor, and search for Deepz0ne at the end of the file.

Now, what does this mean??
Did Microsoft engineer their own sound files with illegally acquired software? Or did they hire a third-party sound technician or business that used this software?? I think that we will never know...

The irony here is incredible! :P :D :D :D :D

Image fixed. On a side note, microsoft did not do it, a contractor did it. Might be that or they downloaded the warez version, created the sound file, then bought the liscense.

Education - A letter may be sent to the company stating that they have been reported for allegedly distributing Microsoft software in an unauthorized manner.

So microsoft is going to give themselves in?

Hey everyone!

I stumbled upon this forum because it was in my referral list in my site stats... I came here, and to my surprise, I found the Microsoft article!

It's cool to see this because I know TheKiler from another forum, and I didn't expect anyone to spread the message (I originally posted) in other forums :P Well anyway, have fun with the news item, we'll have to wait and see what happens...

Bye TheKiler and people!
