what can I use to convert .avi files so I can burn them to disc?

You could just burn the avi to a cd. Some new dvd players actually play divX avi disks. As for converting avi to dvd, erm, I have no idea. Try http://www.doom9.org Nice site to get info on movie burning and stuff ;)
