All the time my case vibrates and the noise is startin to piss me off. I know cause of the harddrive but i dont know what I can do to stop it. Heres a diagram of the inside of my case. :helpsmili Its in a metal box inside the case that removeable from the front of the case, The floppy is also in there.

Try some foam between the cage and the drive. If there isn't room even a sheet of paper folded a few times can make a big difference. If the cage itself is removable do the same with that.

However, hard drives have to be very accurately balanced, it is much more likely that one of your fans (hdd cooler perhaps?) is actually the cause. Try the same thing with your fans and PSU.

What kind of HDD are we talking about here?
I'm betting Maxtor...
Does your case physically vibrate or are we just talking seek/spin noise?

If your HDD shakes and rattles to the point that it annoys you maybe it's time for a new drive.

Are Seagate better than Western Digital?

After having problems with Maxtor I've been using WD for the last 3 years and they haven't let me down :)

Seagate's are decidedly quieter than the other major brands and offer a 5 year warrantee.
Those two things alone make it the HDD of choice for me.

Seagate all the way for me too, they are extremly quiet.

I have the same cage thingy as you, try untightning the screws slightly, also turn the pc on with the side of yoru case off and find the exact part of the hard drive or cage/holder that is making the noise.

Ur an idiot... Some actuall help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok i did what lynx said about the paper and it worked pretty nice but i cant figure a way to put paper around where the box goes into the case Its quite odd... :helpsmili Today I installed an itake fan i think it may be adding to some of the vibration... Im thinking of buying the antec pc noise killer kit that comes with 3 silicone gaskets. 2 for 80 mm fans, in my case the intake/exhaust and a PSU gasket. :ermm:

I tried those "noisekiller" kits and was not at all impressed.
It won't hurt, but if your fans are so unbalanced that they actually vibrate the whole case, they won't help much either.

im guessing the hard drive tray will have some sort of top touching the bottom of the cd drive cage? try putting a screw or two from the cdrom drive cage down into the hard drive cage to make it stop jiggling, and try to do the same fomr the bottom of the case up into the hard drive cage.

OR you could buy some 5.25" to 3.5" brackets to mount the ahrd drive and floppy drive into cd rom drive bays and take that cage out altogether. :)

if the hard drive is vibrating that much, it shouldnt be working at all.

consider this: the read/write head would be the size of the empire state building, and the platter would be the land the building rests on, scaled to a respective size. flip the building upside down and have it hover a few millimeters over the ground. this is how close the r/w head is while over the drive (when scaled down, its only a few nanometers). any heavy vibration originating from the drive, like what you are describing, would cause the head to crash into the platter, permanently damaging the disk. this is why i could swear to you that its NOT the hard drive. if it was, id get it RMAed ASAP.

Did you try the rubber things that go between the harddrive and tray? That could help, or you could try to suspend the whole tray by strings or something to where it isnt touching ANYTHING...but I dont know if you can do that with a harddrive.

I just dont really know of any computer company, other then alienware and voodoo and high end systems like that, that offer high quality parts really. They have shitty mobos, shitty ram, shitty hdds and stuff like that that slow your system down.

Heck, most of the time now you get no discs at all.
They give you ( actually, to be accurate, they take from you) a "recovery partition" and if you want a disc, you make it yourself.
Nice for them (probably save lots of money) and not so nice for you.
