Hey everyone, we’re at Sony’s press event in Culver City to cover their unveiling of the PlayStation 3 this afternoon. Things are just getting started, to stay tuned for our comprehensive live coverage on Engadget and Joystiq!

Update: the parking lot ordeal was harrowing — they almost didn’t let us in! It was a mob scene out there. Some journos were so desparate to get in that they went through all sorts of contortions for the gatekeepers. Check this lady out. That’s a pushup with one foot above her head.
PS3 Contortionist

Ouch.

The presentation started with a little game history. “PlayStation 2 defined digital enterainment…. PlayStation Portable, the next revolution!” The chest thumping was accompanied by thumping speakers.

First up: Kaz Hirai. “Are you guys excited about E3?” The audience barely cheered, so he had to try again. C’mon, show us the goods, then we’ll be excited… maybe.

He does the numbers: 190 million units of hardware, 2 billion units of software. He does the backwards compatibility thing. These are the Sony strengths, so he reminds the audience that these are the goods that Microsoft can’t match.

Queue pointless interlude of flashy CGI graphics (not sure what that was for).

Ken Kutaragi introduced, and he proceeds to give the audience another lesson on the history of the PlayStation consoles. From “Real-time 3D-CG” to “Emotion Engine.” He confirms backwards compatibility of the PlayStation 3, eliciting the first audience applause since he took the stage.

Cut to a video of an IBM dude woodenly reading from a teleprompter (his eyes dart quickly left-to-right) about the cell processor system. “Even though at times it seemed like an impossible journey, the entire team overcame impossible challenges to meet the goals…. We are very excited to look forward to see all the entertainment this chip will help create.”

Highly technical performance overview given, including the following slides:

ps3 floating point calculations

Sony’s let go of the final specs and shots of the PlayStation 3. Here you go!

It will support Blu-ray (obviously), DVD±R/W, CD-R/RW

Backwards compatible with the PlayStation 2 and original Playstation
One 3.2GHz Cell processor—total system performance rated at 2.18 teraflops (uh, that’s actually about twice what Microsoft is claiming the Xbox 360 will do); it will have 256MB system RAM 3.2GHz, and 256MB GDDR VRAM at 700MHz
The nVidia graphics will be called the RSX (”Reality Synthesizer”), and will trump the Xbox 360 with 1080p (yes, that’s a p) graphics support.

Memory Stick Duo slot, and very surprisingly, an SD and CF slots

Bluetooth support with up to seven wireless controllers

Six USB system ports

In computing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computing), FLOPS is an abbreviation of floating point operations per second. This is used as a measure of a computer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer)'s performance, especially in fields of scientific calculations that make heavy use of floating point (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_point) calculations. (Note: a hertz is a cycle (or operation) per second. Compare to MIPS -- million instructions per second (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_instructions_per_second))

Computing devices exhibit an enormous range of performance levels in floating-point applications, so it makes sense to introduce larger units than the FLOPS. The standard SI prefixes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SI_prefix) can be used for this purpose, resulting in such units as the megaFLOPS (MFLOPS, 106 FLOPS), the gigaFLOPS (GFLOPS, 109 FLOPS), the teraFLOPS (TFLOPS, 1012 FLOPS), and the petaFLOPS (PFLOPS, 1015 FLOPS).

Think of it as a way to measure how many operations it can run per second. Roughly.

For scaler/processor manufacturers, it generally means that you can drive a display device at higher frequency than the typical HDTV display (which is generally not very demanding). A scaler that can upconvert to 1080p signal normally supports variety of other resolutions in between to match the native (or golden) resolution of the display used for optimal image quality.
Digital displays come in all resolution flavors, the most commonly used are:

1280x720
1280x768
1366x768
1400x788
1280x1024
1400x1050
1600x1200

Number means the resolution and p for progressive, i for interlaced.

Wow, thats great news on the PS3, up till now I didn't read the "speculations" of what the PS3 will be capable of, but this blew me away. Definitely interesting, once again Microsoft gets owned (unless they've been lying the whole time).

Ok, and now this:

http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/princeofpersia3/preview_6124898.html

Prince Of Persia 3
Ubisoft has been working steadily to mature its reinvention of the Prince of Persia series into a solid franchise ever since the first Prince of Persia debuted in 2003. The third-person platformer offered a fresh take on the old 2D rotoscoped adventure game that challenged you to navigate all manner of hazards on your way to rescue a fair maiden. The latest 3D update of the classic series has sprung from Ubisoft's Montreal studio, which has reenvisioned the prince as a swashbuckling action hero with mystic-fueled time powers. To date, there have been two entries starring this new prince--The Sands of Time and Warrior Within--that have made strides to establish and evolve the budding action hero. While The Sands of Time was universally embraced, Warrior Within actually polarized fans, who either loved or hated the new game's direction. For the prince's third outing, tentatively called Prince of Persia 3, Ubisoft is aiming to blend elements from both games into a new adventure (set to release this fall) that continues the tale of the agile hero. We got an early look at the game at a pre-E3 press event, wherein Ubisoft walked us through a work-in-progress version of the upcoming platformer.

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/135/reviews/926985_20050516_screen002.jpg

Like its predecessors, Prince of Persia 3 continues the narrative that began in The Sands of Time by once again messing with your head through the employment of time travel. It seems our boy still isn't out of the woods yet, even after having altered time and space to set things right. The game opens up shortly after the finale of Warrior Within, where it finds the prince returning home abuzz from his victory. For about half a second, it appears as if Prince of Persia 3 may end up focusing on the prince's happy home life with his main squeeze Kaileena. However, upon arriving home to the magnificent city of Babylon, the prince finds all-new trouble. The once grand kingdom is ravaged by war, and for some odd reason, all his people have turned against him. With the prince captured, Kaileena does the only thing she can do to help: She unleashes the sands of time to save the prince by sacrificing herself. (D'oh!) The good news is that Kaileena's sacrifice does the trick, and the prince escapes his captors. The bad news is that the prince discovers he has a dark twin who's been created because of all his mucking about with time. Unsurprisingly, the pair doesn't get along. But like any good buddy movie starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, the two have no choice but to work together to stay alive.

The rich story helps set up the new gameplay mechanics in Prince of Persia 3 that let you play as the prince (whom we all know and love) and his grumpier twin. Though the core elements that have made the series popular are all here (you'll still solve puzzles, control time, perform all manner of athletic feats, and battle many foes), they're being given a new twist courtesy of the two playable characters. Each incarnation of the prince will now have his own specialty gameplay you'll have to use to make it through the game alive. The prince we all know handles almost exactly as he previously has, although his balance has been changed up. In Prince of Persia 3, you'll rely on him more for his acrobatics than for his combat skills, although he can still hold his own in a fight. The dark prince, on the other hand, is your go-to guy for murdering, especially when performing the stealthy kind. The shadowy avatar comes packing a wicked hook blade, called a "daggertail," that offers some stealth options that are key to getting around Babylon.

However, don't think Ubi has stapled Splinter Cell gameplay onto the standard Prince of Persia formula. The dark prince still has an action feel to him. You'll still have to slow down a bit when lining up a kill, such as when you're balanced on a chain directly above your prey and are about to drop on him. However, combat still has a good feel to it that improves on the direction Warrior Within started heading in. Your time powers have been tweaked some--allowing for some new surprises that Ubi will reveal later on--which will also complement the new gameplay mechanics. As far as structure goes, Prince of Persia 3 will feature more of a free-roaming mechanic than the previous games in the series. You'll be able to explore the streets of Babylon or run across rooftops, depending on the situation and who you're playing as. From the sounds of it, the normal prince is tailor-made for roof hopping, while the dark prince is the guy you want on the streets. To switch between the two, you'll have to walk in fire to get your dark side on, and you'll have to take a dip in some life-restoring water to lighten up.

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2005/135/reviews/926985_20050516_screen003.jpg

The game's presentation, while still being pieced together, is coming along well. The visuals are sticking to the ambitious precedent set by the previous entries in the series, presenting the keen eye for scale that has always been a high point of the franchise. We were only able to see a bit of the war-ravaged Babylon, but, as a once-epic kingdom that was brought down by war, it was looking good. The rooftops let you see far off into the distance, where fires and smoke are visible. The streets were in ruin, but they were the perfect places to sneak around for killing. The audio in the work in progress was still coming together, but Ubi reps on hand noted that in keeping with the goal of melding the best aspects of the previous games, Prince of Persia 3 will attempt to walk the delicate line between Warrior Within's Hoobastank-fueled rock and The Sands of Time's more ethereal soundtrack.

Based on our early look, Prince of Persia 3 seems to be aiming for a middle ground that should appeal to fans of both games. The new gameplay options open to both princes, as well as their unique feels, should provide good amounts of depth to mine while playing. The story is, once again, a powerful draw that will no doubt suck you in as you try to unravel what the heck went wrong this time. The visuals that are currently being cooked up to frame both the narrative and varied action are looking epic, thus wrapping the whole package up nicely. Prince of Persia 3 is slated to ship this fall for the GameCube, PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox , so look for more on the game from the E3 show floor and in the coming months.

sweet.

Prince Of Persia 2 was a big dissapointment, Ubi promises that it will go back to its roots like in Sands of Time. I saw some futage, nothing look real good. I did like the chariot races, and some of the new moves. It all depends on game play tho, will see.

Xbox360 Some Backward Compatibility and Square-Enix Brings FFXI to Xbox
>> From Forbes.com (http://www.forbes.com/technology/personaltech/2005/05/16/cx_ah_0516xbox.html):

One of the best-selling video games of all time, Final Fantasy, will be available for the first time on Microsoft's Xbox. The company also confirmed that some of the top-selling current Xbox games will work with the forthcoming Xbox 360, due out later this year. Typically, customers are forced to spend an average of $50 on new video games every time a new hardware console comes out.

Xbox 360 @ E3 live coverage
xbox 360 left of stage

Hey everyone, we up in the Shrine Auditorium to give you complete live coverage of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 E3 event. We know they formally announced the device last week on MTV (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000617043196/), but hopefully we’ll all get some of these burning questions answered this evening. Stay tuned: we’re live!

While we’re waiting to get this show on the road, here’s a quick recap of what’s gone down. Today’s Sony PS3 unveiling (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000050043558/) has opened up a world of questions regarding how Microsoft expects to maintain a competitive edge against a system that will supposedly have more than double the raw processing power, a next-gen media drive (Blu-ray, in this case), two-generation backwards compatibility, and even support for 1080p hi-def. We also still don’t know how much the Xbox 360 is going to cost, an exact release date, what kinds of configurations it will have, and, of course the big question: will it have backwards compatibility?

Ok, we’re getting started. Let’s roll!

http://img204.echo.cx/img204/5384/55636831460699143xt.jpg

Kim’s here to “start us on a journey”. Man, Microsoft, hyping this at all?
They’re showing what appears to be a commercial for the device. A commercial eh? Feels a bit like that’s what this whole event happens to be.

http://img204.echo.cx/img204/9527/55636831460699147mf.jpg

We’ve got three execs up on stage, including Xbox posterboy J. Allard. They’re calling this the “most powerful entertainment system in the world”. Ok, we’ll let them prove it to us then, yeah? They’re talking up their successes with the original Xbox—”over 20m customers”, and a $125 million in sales in one day with Halo 2. Yes, yes, we know. Now they’re chatting up new Xbox 2005 titles. Can we hit the 360 yet, s.v.p.?

s.v.p.?

Two words: backwards compatability! That’s right, everyone. It’ll play Xbox games!

They still aren’t giving up any specific date, but we can apparently expect the Xbox 360 to hit stores this year. The interesting part? It’ll be a simultaneous launch for the US, Europe, and Asia—something we’ve never really seen anyone attempt (successfully) before.

They’re showing off a rather long, elaborate demo of Dead or Alive 4 for the 360. Showing off cutscenes and video shots this way makes it hard to tell how much is prerendered—so we’re assuming it all is. But if most of it isn’t, well, we’re more than a little impressed by these visuals.

http://img208.echo.cx/img208/3529/55636831460699149jr.jpg
J. Allard’s back up. He’s claiming that we can expect between 25 and 40 game titles for the 360 this year, and there are more than a hundred additional titles yet in development. He’s talking up “the HD-era”, and how they’re going to “reach one billion people with our medium.”

http://img72.echo.cx/img72/2232/55636831460699147ac.jpg

J’s showing off the new dashboard system, and talking up Xbox Live Silver, their free level of out-of-box service. This will include the bread n’ butter online gaming, as well as video messages, player matching, tourneys, music and photo sharing, the gamercard and gamer achievements, the Live marketplace, and more.

He’s talking about Xbox Live Arcade, targeted at “non-gamers”, which is a simplified “old school/retro” gaming experience. It appears to be free to Xbox 360 owners. Hmm, hardware margin.

http://img240.echo.cx/img240/1912/55636831460699147jw.jpg

They confirmed it! iPod and PSP integration! How much? We dunno, but we’re definitely going to find out for you exactly what we can expect.

http://img240.echo.cx/img240/9641/55636831460699144rn.jpg

Uh, they’re showing a total nonsequitur video of Gates and Ballmer hanging out in line in the Star Wars line to try and understand their demographic. Ballmer says, “HD! HD! HD!” Man, no one else here found that funny. But Allard got it right: “Billionaire software moguls attempting to be funny.” Um, yeah.

Peter Moore comes on to yammer on about the zen of running. He wants to deliver “the Zen of gaming”, and he’s introduced a demo vid of Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s latest masterpiece. Looks totally hot, very classic Japanese RPG drama. They’re also showing off in-game vids of Ghost Recon 3, which looks unbelievably hot. They are also showing off NBA 2K6 and Kameo. Their Call of Duty 2 demo was a little choppy, which is a little unexpected. Oblivion—the sequel to Morrowind—is being narrated by none other than Patric Stewart. Patric freaking Stewart, dude. Now Gears of War, which will apparently “literally make you afraid to lift up th controller.”

E3 2005: PlayStation 3 vs. Xbox 360
Let's take a cursory look at the two heavyweight next-gen systems and how they stack up against one another.

May 16, 2005 - So the next-generation of console gaming is going to be damn impressive. We've seen PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in action and we are enormously impressed. We've seen games, we've seen specs and we've shared our thoughts. But which titan will win the day?

All we really want to know is which platform will be the biggest beast? For tech junkies, there's really nothing better than wolfing down long lists of numbers. That's because right now there is honestly no way for anyone to decide which system is the best, so all the number munching lets people with nothing better to do argue a bunch. Since we never have anything better to do we can post some of these numbers and speculate! So here's a little table that'll give you a good idea of what to expect from both systems.

[Ed's note: The Nintendo Revolution has not been revealed as of press time. We will, however, return during the course of this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo and include Nintendo's next system in the comparison if and when concrete information on it becomes available.]

Don Mattrick, Pres of EA studios worldwide came onstage. He looks a lot like a (very) poor man’s Tom Cruise—let’s say Risky Business era—and he also brought with him Oakland Raider Robert Gallery, who’s only about 800 times larger than both of them put together. He’s claiming this is the largest EA dev commitment in their history with 25 titles in development. At least 6 will be out this year, including Need For Speed: Most Wanted, The Godfather, Fifa 06, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, and, of course, Madden 06.

Microsoft brought out Yoichi Wada, President of Square Enix, to announce their partnership and in developing for the Xbox 360, specifically Final Fantasy XI with Xbox Live integration.

Well, that’s it! They’re wrapping up here, so be sure to get up early (if you’re on the left coast, anyay) for our live coverage of what Nintendo’s got up their sleeves. We out!

FYI indie rock nerds: they’re outroing with the Kaiser Chiefs. FYI everyone else who was soo excited last week about the Killers playing music in promotion of the new Xbox 360. They’re playing live here tonight, and yeah, we’re gonna heckle them like bigs. “Play Worked Up So Sexual!” Ok, maybe not.

That would rock, but sadly now. Its Advent Children, the movie based on the greatest installment in the FF series. It is after FF7 and Degus Cerbus (or how ever you spell it). They will be making a sequal to it, but it will be for the psp. Theres no talk as of yet about one for the ps3. Lets hope to god they do.

That's not Advent Children, it's real gameplay footage for the FF7 Tech demo for the PS3, which is why everyone is specualting on if they're doing a remake or not, pretty cool video, shows a few scenes from the game redone for the PS3. They said it's just a sample though and they're not planning anything, which is probably the truth, Square seems to enjoy pissing off their fans.

E3 2005: PS3 Price Revealed?
One of the most expensive consoles ever created, according to Japanese reports.
by Matt Casamassina

May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.

Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The beast of a machine utilizes the powerful Cell processor, a custom-designed graphics chip by Nvidia, and 512MBs of RAM for a quantum leap in performance. The system will also be the first-ever to support high-def movie-playback out of the box, taking advantage of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc format.

Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. If Mainichi Shimbun is correct, gamers will be asked to pay a hefty price for the high-end functionality.

IGN was unable to validate this news with Sony officials. Stay tuned for more as the story breaks.

Killzone 2 (for those who dont know):

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/killzone2/preview_6125066.html?tag=boxcar_all_preview_image

Killzone 2 E3 2005 Preshow Report
All right, it's Killzone 2. Although the original game wasn't very warmly received, Guerrilla is back with Killzone 2, and at this point, it's definitely the talk of the show.

Although the footage of Killzone 2 is fairly brief, it manages to walk viewers through an entire landing sequence. It opens with nothing but a shot of clouds, but quickly pulls back to reveal human faces. And oh, what faces they are. The fidelity and reality of the models here are frankly unbelievable, easily matching fully CGI Hollywood films of just a few years ago. It's not too difficult to imagine something like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within rendered in real time with the Killzone 2 engine. The models and animations here are so smooth, in fact, that it's tempting to assume that the Killzone 2 footage is prerendered or somehow doctored, but if it is all in-engine, and we have no reason to believe that it's not, then it's going to be hard to imagine a game coming along during E3 that's more visually impressive than this.

The footage, as mentioned, starts off in the air, as an aerial landing craft filled with soldiers descends onto a ruined urban landscape. After a near collision with another landing craft, and after witnessing the destruction of a fellow vessel, which subsequently crashes into a building, the landing craft that the video focuses on manages to safely land, and soldier whose point of view we're following leaps over the side onto the ground. The whole sequence is somewhat reminiscent of the Normandy invasion as seen in films like Saving Private Ryan or in the first Medal of Honor game for the PC.

The action doesn't end there, though, as the first-person viewpoint takes you underneath a bridge near the landing zone, where you begin fighting off the unknown enemies, which sport trenchcoats and gas masks and bear a striking resemblance to the combine soldiers of Half-Life 2. After picking off a few of them, they counterattack with a flamethrower, which engulfs a few of your compatriots. After you shoot the flamethrower enemy, though, he whips around and accidentally burns his own teammates alive and also manages to destroy one of their vehicles, which explodes. Well, it looks quite nice is all we can say.

The last segment of the video takes you atop the bridge near the landing zone, where more of the unknown soldiers are getting slaughtered. Unfortunately, they bring in backup in the form of a gunship, which quickly eliminates yet more of your soldiers, but you have an answer for that, as you pelt it with a heat-seeking rocket and send it crashing...right into your position on the bridge. The final image of the trailer is of the gunship crashing and flipping off the bridge into midair, which occurs just before the image fades to the Killzone logo.

We're not ashamed to say that the Killzone 2 video has made many GameSpot editors' jaws drop; most of us have watched it half a dozen times or so since it hit our booth. Our only lingering thought is whether or not this is actual in-game footage; the footage looks a far sight more impressive than some of the other games on display (although they're all quite impressive), and there are virtually no frame rate discrepancies to be found, even when the screen is overwhelmed by particle effects, such as when the various vehicles explode. If this is true in-game rendering, though, and again, we have no reason to believe that it's not, then Killzone 2 is definitely one of the most impressive visual demos ever to appear at E3, alongside the first appearances of MGS2, Half-Life 2, and Doom 3. Only time will tell if Killzone 2 turns out to be a good game or not, but for now, we're definitely pumped to see more of this game in the future.

I agree, it definitely looks like a halo killer  not too mention it puts movies like saving private ryan to shame, but then again, SPR was based on true events so i shouldn't compare those two together....but still, Killzone 2 looks fucking amazing, its beautiful :01:
Yup! For those of you who havn't seen it.

That game I was talking about earlier, Gears of War, I must say....this game has the best graphics i've seen ever, using Unreal 3.0 Technology ( ):

the video quality is uber crap, so here are some pics (note: the last 2 pics should be familiar...we all thought they were from Unreal 3 the game, who could've thought it was the Xbox360's Gears of War):

just to balance out the wow factor of sony & microsoft's inflated performance measurements ("twice as powerful as this, thirty times as powerful as that, a gazillion and a half terrabogoflops") and the first-party development toadies going "omg hands-down THE BEST PLATFORM that i have ever tried to write a game for," some dirty laundry that was aired a couple of months ago by programmers/designers at the GDC (game developers conference):

as reported by gamespy.com

Greg Costikyan: "My Friends, We Are F--ed."

Probably the best speaker of the afternoon was Costikyan, whose original notes are posted on his blog if you want a complete transcript. Costikyan has been in the industry from the earliest days and approached the topic from a historical perspective: he said that every major success in gaming has come from bursts of innovation followed by imitators. It was true for board games, for RPGs, and ultimately for gaming.

"But it's over now," he says.

The reason is the escalating costs. Companies are estimating the cost of next-generation games will be over $20 million per title. Publishers don't want to take risks with that kind of price hanging over their heads. Without risks, there's no innovation. Without innovation, the industry chokes on itself.

Costikyan says that the Microsoft Keynote Speech made his flesh crawl. MS talks about big bucks, big bucks ... but none of it to be made by game developers themselves. MS gave away HD monitors at the end of their keynote: "Was your allegiance bought at the price of a television?" Costikyan asked.

The Nintendo keynote didn't win Costikyan over, either. "Iwata says he has the heart of a gamer," he points out. "What poor bastard did he carve it from?" Costikyan railed against Nintendo's premise, asking "is our idea of innovation blowing into a microphone?"

The industry, he concludes, is too terrified to take risks. The answer? Revolution! The game development community has choices. He asked the room, do they want to work in some sweat shop cranking out car models for some crappy Gran Turismo racing game sequel that has the same basic gameplay as Pole Position? Or do they want to "defy the machine?" He encouraged people to set up independent studios, to support shareware and digital distribution, and to start making creative games today.

There's been subsequent followup and discussion on Costikyan's blog, if you're interested in more reports from the front line.

Chris Hecker: "Sony and Microsoft are About to Screw Your Game Design"

Hecker took a more technical look at the industry. He says that 'back in the day,' game code was balanced: you had equal emphasis on graphics, physics, and gameplay. He demonstrated this in a Power Point presentation showing a geeky skinny guy. The way the industry has evolved, game code has been very lopsided: a picture of a modern game showed a skinny guy with one massive, muscular arm representing graphics.

He observes that game engine code is very straightforward, whereas gameplay code is typically sloppy, adjustable, and "crazy." This hasn't been a problem in recent console generations, for hardware reasons. Recent processors allow out-of-order code execution, so that "even crappy code" would work fast. But the next-generation Xbox and Sony's Cell processors are all in-order execution chips. That's great for high-speed graphics, but it makes fast gameplay code MUCH harder to write.

Hecker didn't provide any solutions, he just wanted to vent. Maybe Nintendo will come up with something better. Or maybe developers should all go back to making PC games. He also suggested crying. But Hecker didn't have the answers.

the gist of all that: contrary to sony & MS's claims, the gameplay and AI on ps3 and xbox 360 will be not be any better, more complex, or more innovative than the older systems. according to these guys, the chip designs are lions when it comes to graphics code and kittens when it comes to game code. and in order to create the kind of graphics that the new systems emphasize, development teams are going to need to be HUGE because of the sheer number of polygons, textures & effects that will need to be designed. and with the increase in development time + costs, nobody will risk developing unusual, experimental new-school games. all of that extra money and labor will just go to creating a prettier version of the old-school stuff that everyone's already played.

also. anyone notice how many ugly games have been released for ps2 and xbox over the past few years, which look nowhere near as good as the pre-launch demos did? heck, a lot of ps2 games have been worse than dreamcast-quality, as far as graphics go. they promise total progress, then deliver product that actually performs worse than an older, weaker, but more efficient & programmer-friendly system. i'm willing to bet that the ps3 and xbox360 are both going to see a lot of games that are way way way below the graphics quality of the 2005 E3 demos, despite the hype about how close to photo-realism it's all supposed to be.

i am not expecting the new systems to totally suck. obviously they will not totally suck. but i'm skeptical about how necessary they are, considering the GDC complaints that sony and MS's new systems will push graphics far ahead, yet leave gameplay behind. and maybe i'm just blind and crazy but the ps2, xbox & gc's games still look pretty good to me? yeah yeah i know, it's all about the $$$. but nevertheless. so far the new stuff ain't lookin' THAT much better than the old stuff, to my eyes.
